    Herb,

I just wanted to thank you personally for your convictions, and for standing up for them. To think how far this country & world has come from the days of racial and sexual (male v. female) inequality, yet we still have so far to go in terms of acceptance when it comes to personal beliefs in this area (GBLT).

This year represents the 10 year aniversary of local (Duluth) churchs uniting to form acceptance within their walls, called Opening our Doors, Opening our Hearts. Let me encourage everyone to attend this year’s confrence on April 16 & 17th.

First United Methodist Church (The Copper Top) is slated to host the opening service at 6:00 on Friday, featuring contempory music by their own band, Tapestry. Marshall school will be hosts for much activity through out the day on Saturday the 17TH.

    Thanks again, Herb!

My daughter was born 6 weeks early on Oct 16, 2005 and rushed from Grand Rapids to St Mary’s NICU in Duluth on LifeFlight N911SM. Today, January 5th 2010, N911SM left the pod at St Mary’s for the last time. If it were not for N911SM, pilot Mike and flight medic Ed, my daughter probably would not have made it. She just turned 4 and is strong and healthy thanks to the wondeful people at SMDC both on the ground and in the air. I owe you big time. It is a very emotional day for me, and I’m sure for everyone else who have benefited from the services of N911SM LifeFlight. Long may she fly !!

Ms. Basara was named 2010 Miss Minnesota USA, not for the second year in a row. Last year, she came in 6th in the Miss Teen USA contest, which probably has you confused.

    Howie,

Actually goals scored in Saturdays game Den-S St.Paul (Den 3) 1 by Little Tally and the other two were by Keith Tombo. J-Dog didn’t score but did Apple one of Tombo’s goals. The press didn’t record it right in the box scores. You heard it straight today!

Now if the mayor would just get with the program and collect the past due lease amounts and utility bills this winter from Cirrus, then he will be doing his job.

  6. Tonto says:

It just goes to prove that the cost/benefit ratio for this rail project is totally out of line and this project should be canceled now! There are other alternatives. There is a shuttle service that is very efficient and much less costly. Until that becomes completely overwhelmed there is no need for a rail line. There are always those who love to spend other people’s money but either don’t have a pot to pee in or will not put their own money where their mouth is.
Money for this rail project could be better spent in many more ways and be of more use to the general public.

  13. Howie says:

    Thanks, Smalls. My bad.

Having Proctor at the bottom of the Class A prep boys Northeastern MN is a bit of a slap in the face. The predictions I have for Proctor will be in the top 5 to 7 of the 14 teams listed.

  16. Matt Erickson says:

Hey this is Matt Erickson, I just wanted to say that i was a senior last year. Therefore, shouldnt be mentioned as a returner.

  17. Julie Sims says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if people who comment on the Bantam A’s got their facts straight before falsely reporting the kids’ background? Ya gotta wonder if there’s a little bitterness for some other reason.

  18. John says:

Do you know the Superior Spartans Boy Hockey team roster and full schedule for the up coming season?

could you be anymore obsessed with duluth east? your one of the few who like that damn place in this city except for it’s arrogant community.

  21. John says:

What a fabulous concert. Such a high level of performance and entertainment so early in the year is outstanding. Kudos to Mr. O and all the participants.

  22. Peky says:

Excuse me if I am not too excited for them. It’s not an even playing field. Moore and Irwin played at Woodland and Valensano played for Duluth Heights. They are AAA players and should all be playing for the Lakers. Parker, the goalie is not from the area and is the 95 AAA Lake Superior Stars Goalie. Not sure how he is eligible for the team. Valesano palyed JV for EAST last year so he could play BN A this year. Obviously the HS Coach is involved in all of this. Knock the botton off of any of the 4 area BN A teams (Clouquet, Hermantown, Superior, Lakers) and add these 4 players and you will have a team that has a chance at state. When East BN-A pounds the rest of the teams in the area people should know this so they can put it in perspective. The other teams have players that are as good as these boys, just not as many. Look at the PEEWEE A record of 2 years ago when these 4 kids were not on the team to see what I am saying.

  23. Greg Toscano says:

    Howie,

It wasn’t shattuck that was defeated in overtime but Edina. Thanks for your coverage of this Bantam A team.

  24. 1218 says:

I think he did. Good luck Derek.

  25. Marissa says:

I’m confused by your headline: “GAMC fix includes missing pieces.”

Could you explain what that means and how that fits in with your post? I’d say a more appropriate headline would be along the lines of “GAMC unallotment leaves gaps” or “MN Care not a substitute for GAMC.”

See the following for 2 great articles that talk about the effects of the unallotment and some information on who is on GAMC:

Was I halucinating, or did I see correctly? After touring the haunted ship last weekend with my college age daughters, I was left with an uneasy feeling of a (possible) slam/attack on my Christian & Catholic Faith. The last seen was a depiction of a church with a skeleton hanging from the cross, and the impersonation of a religious person/clergy in my face telling me its not true, its fake, while proceeding to tear up, chew, spit out, what I am thinking was pages of the bible. Not sure what this had to do with any of the previously toured exhibits of the rest of the ship or why it was included. With the theme being, (Haunted Tours Goes Hollywood) I guess one should not be surprised. Thanks for the scare, I think I have seen my LAST hautned ship!

  32. Travis says:

Howie, I would just like to say thank you for running this website. I remember you from hockey season last year when I played on the jv team, you did a a great job. I play on Denfeld’s football team as a linebacker, #41. It means a lot when you come out and give coverage of our football team. It is greatly apperciated all that you do. Hope to see you at the section finals! Thank you again.

  33. dont ask says:

the northern stars were not the runner-up in section 7aa last winter.

Congratulations girls…well done!! Thanks for the post Howie!

Neill Kelley I think should be listed on the top 20 list. After a busy spring of attending junior camps and just town/team visits by the request of those teams, he must be on a list some where. Remember he is a fresh 16yr old junior, with his birth day coming in aug. He maybe young but has good size, skills, experience and a nice hybrid style which most tenders lack today.

Two more Duluth filmmakers have been added to the lineup of local media stars at the Cinema Lounge: Carrie Boberg and Max Becker. There’s a lot of talent in this town!! Come on down to the Zinema2 and meet the filmmakers!

  38. Amber Bird says:

Zack has been doing really well this year:) I’m very proud of him<3
His Uncle Anthony would be very proud also..

  39. Jim says:

Hey Howie. Do you agree that the current City of Duluth administration should continue its policy of not taking action against Cirrus Design to force collection of $250,000 in past due rent that is as much as 300 days past due, which they are doing for political reasons and concern for local private investors in opposition to the best interests of taxpayers? Apparently, it is more important to provide funds in support of local investors rather than mitigate local taxpayer burdens even though some taxpayers are single moms and low income people.

  40. Bob MacLean says:

As the new president of the Lincoln Park Business Group (LPBG) I want to be clear that Heath Hickok’s endorsement for Kerry Gauthier is a personal endorsement. The LPBG is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and does not endorse any political candidates. We recently held our annual meeting and invited all 4 at-large candidates along with the District 2 candidates for a well balanced question and answer forum. We appreciate everyone’s participation and look forward to continuing our role in business development for the Lincoln Park Business District.

  42. C Johnson says:

The City has now made 2 very low blows to retirees. The first being the PERA debaucle which has yet to be settled and now this medical insurance fiasco. A judge, who obviously doesn’t understand the meaning of a “contract”, has given the City leave to take away good medical insurance coverage from people who may have retired early because of medical issues, etc., and said the City can replace it with mediocre coverage. Some of these retirees may now need to go back into the work force to cover the gap left by the extra costs they will have to bear. Will the City be willing to rehire those retirees that now need supplemental income? Probably not. The decisions that people made to retire were based in a very large part on the retiree medical insurance they would have after retirement. For a judge to blatently disregard historical precedence already set on this very same issue is a travesty of justice! What this says to me is the City of Duluth’s promises are no better than the paper they are written on. Contract set between the Unions and employees mean nothing. I certainly hope the Retirees will ask for an injunction and a retrial!
