Some Lakeside residents are upset because liquor sales were brought up again at the City Council’s agenda session Thursday night. Mayor Don Ness has proposed putting it on the November ballot for Lakeside and Lester Park. Everyone seemed in favor of it.
Sharla Gardner, new 3rd District council member replacing Russ Stewart, is going to try to amend that resolution Monday night. She wants it on a citywide ballot.
Lester Park citizens feel since they are the affected ones, they should be voting, not the whole city. Time is of essence, so Lester Park residents are encouraged to e-mail their councilors with one note that will get to them all. The e-mail to all councilors: council@duluthmn.gov (E-mails must get there by Monday.) It just needs to be a few sentences.
Lester Park residents are encouraging their neighbors and friends throughout the city to do the same. They welcome letters to the editor at letters@duluthnews.com or mailing letters to: Letters to the Editor, 424 W. First St. Duluth, MN 55802. Please include your phone number. Attendance at the City Council meeting is another option Monday, in 3rd floor of City Hall.
By allowing liquor licenses, we are allowing multiple uses of the licenses. The same license used for the Cozy is used for the Norshor. By passing liquor licenses “wily nilly”, we are inviting multiple liquor licenses in our community. Is this possible?
Yes, it could even mean drinking at tables outside of liquor establishments. It means we are allowing serving liquor at restaurants, liquor stores, liquor in strip clubs, and liquor in grocery stores. What’s next? Moving the Cozy and Norshor to Lakeside?
Liquor increases traffic at liquor stores. We live in a Duluth residential area that has less crime than other parts of the city. Will businesses be putting bars on the windows in the future?
Wine or smoking does not make a restaurant. It’s quality service and food. There are enough liquor stores in Duluth, and enough competition with liquor in various restaurants.
We need “restricted liquor licenses” in Duluth!
