Duluth LISC brings new AmeriCorps funding, service positions to Duluth

image007Duluth LISC has announced the first eight of fourteen 2009-2010 Duluth LISC AmeriCorps members:

. Jessica Kershner, Duluth Energy Efficiency Program, Common Ground
. Jacob Wagner, Neighborhood Housing Services
. Angela Yoeckel, Lutheran Social Services
. Jackie Bradley, Northern Communities Land Trust
. Peter Jonas, Lutheran Social Services
. Anthony Marsh, Spirit Valley Citizens Neighborhood Development Association
. Julia Cheng, Community Action Duluth
. Codie Leseman, FitCity Duluth

Duluth LISC AmeriCorps members are working with local organizations to have a direct impact in the lives of residents in Central Hillside, East Hillside, Lincoln Park, West Duluth and Morgan Park. United through Duluth LISC’s At Home in Duluth collaborative and its Sustainable Community initiative, these neighborhoods focus on revitalization and resident quality of life. Quality of life aspects of a Sustainable Community include employment and workforce development, increasing income and assets, housing preservation and development, crime prevention, access to quality education and healthcare and strengthening arts and culture opportunities.

“We at Duluth LISC are very proud to see AmeriCorps members working in our five core neighborhoods promoting volunteerism and civic engagement to residents in Central Hillside, East Hillside, Lincoln Park, West Duluth and Morgan Park,” said Nan Stubenvoll, Duluth LISC Program Officer. “It was a very competitive process nationally to secure the funding and start a Duluth LISC AmeriCorps targeting revitalization and resident involvement.”

Activities of Duluth LISC AmeriCorps members include hosting community events, developing affordable housing, homeownership/foreclosure prevention counseling, active living programs, community organizing; and aiding low-income individuals gain access to resources. As part of their experience, Duluth LISC AmeriCorps members receive a living expense stipend and eligibility for an education award as well as orientation, skill development, leadership training and participation in a peer network of other AmeriCorps members in the region.
