BulldogsfootballThe Bulldogs lost to Grand Valley State 24-10 in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals today before 4,211 at Malosky Stadium.

Bulldogs freshman quarterback Chase Vogler, who was thrust into action earlier this season due to an injury to the team’s starter, threw four interceptions. He was just 8-20 for 102 yards.

Isaac Odim returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a score to give defending NCAA Division II champion UMD (11-2) its only lead of the game.

“I thought our guys played exceptionally hard,” Bulldogs coach Bob Nielson said. “But Grand Valley State certainly deserved to win today today — they made more plays than we did.”

Odim, the nation’s fourth-highest rusher at 145.1 yards per game, was held to a career-low 67 rushing yards on 18 carries.

“I thought they just played real well on defense,” said Odim, UMD’s all-time career rushing, scoring and touchdown leader. “Our offense has to do a better job of putting points on the board. But we really can’t make any excuses this time. They just outplayed us.”

Grand Valley (12-1) advances to face Carson-Newman in the NCAA Division II semifinals.
