“From Out of the Flames” Exhibition
Time: Mon-Sat 10 am-5 pm/Sun 1 pm-5 pm
Objects of extraordinary transformative beauty are created when base materials such as clay or silica are manipulated in the artist’s hands and exposed to intense heat and flame. This exhibition will highlight area practitioners of this alchemical art form and present works of ceramic and glass. The ceramic arts have been a strong tradition in the Northland for decades. Glassblowing, however, is relatively new on the scene and this exhibition will be a new opportunity to see work from these related disciplines presented side by side. The participating artists are: Broc Allen, Janis Andler, Jane Fleeson, Bob Husby, Margaret Kirtley-Sternberg, Thomas Marma, Roald Molberg, Linda Powless, Gail Rosenquist, Jim Sage, Anne Sterbenz-Duus, and Kim Whittaker. Held at the George Morrison Gallery/Duluth Art Institute.

A Handful of Clay: Dave Lynas, Ceramics and Drawings
Museum Hours: Tues 9 am -8 pm, Wed –Fri 9 am -4:30 pm, Sat & Sun 1 pm-5 pm
The exhibition presents Lynas’ drawings, illustrations, and ceramics. An incredibly diverse artist working for decades in sculptural and wheel-thrown clay, Lynas began his career as a successful illustrator in the corporate advertising world. In the 1970s Lynas and his young family lived off the land in Wisconsin and northern Minnesota, while he continued as a freelance illustrator. Eventually, his experimentation with clay, kiln construction and glazing techniques became the central focus of his art. Dave Lynas has been the Ceramics Studio Manager at the Duluth Art Institute for the past 15 years, and is largely responsible for the success of the “Empty Bowl” project, a fundraiser for Duluth’s Second Harvest Northern Food Shelf. His enthusiasm as a teacher has inspired scores of artists of all ages. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication documenting the history of Lynas’ technical achievements in clay and glaze techniques, illustrated by his own drawings and color reproductions of his work. Held at the Tweed Museum of Art/UMD.

“Kind: New Work by Kristina Estell” Exhibition
Time: Mon-Sat 10 am-5 pm/Sun 1 pm-5 pm
Kristina Estell is an extraordinarily talented installation artist who creates the type of art that is often present for only a given period of time in a given space-art that relies as much on idea as execution for its success. In her recent work she has created evocative and sensual installations based on the overwhelming presence of water and rock in Duluth, where she lives. Estell also creates art that is in a constant state of change. One piece planned for this exhibition involves living plants whose leaves are encased in protective mesh sleeves! Estell turns a kind eye she on her subject matter-a kindness she passes on as she enjoins her audience to look at and contemplate the world around them in a completely new way. Held at the John Steffl Gallery/Duluth Art Institute.

Selected Illustrations of Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the Potlatch Collection
Museum Hours: Tues 9 am -8 pm, Wed –Fri 9 am -4:30 pm, Sat & Sun 1 pm-5 pm
Over 75 years ago the Northwest Paper Company of Cloquet, Minnesota recruited the image of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or Mounties, to advertise its papers to the printing industry. The company wanted to establish a corporate identity that would reflect the integrity of its product. By the 1930s, the image of the Mountie as a strong, successful figure from the Great Northwest had been firmly established in American popular culture through film, fiction, photographs, toys and souvenirs. With these associations, the Mountie promised to maintain the right image for the company. These images, reproduced for nearly seventy-five years on Northwest Paper/Potlatch calendars, notepads, broadsides, and print ads, have long been collected by those seeking images of the “northwoods,” as exemplified by the pioneering deeds of the steadfast Mountie. A variety of Mountie merchandise is currently available in the museum store. In celebration of the RCMP exhibition; the Tweed Museum Store is offering 20% off all Mountie merchandise, from May 23rd through September 7th. Held at the Tweed Museum of Art/UMD.

Time: Museum hours are Tues 9 am -8pm, Wed –Fri 9am -4:30 pm, Sat & Sun 1-5 pm
Drawing from the figure with a focus on the sculptural dimensions of the human head, Sylvia Schuster asks us to consider drawing not only as a way of seeing but also as a way of thinking about the condition of being human and of existence itself. Big Al Carter’s paintings are larger than life in size and power and scope – an equal to the artist’s personality and to his reputation as a painter’s painter and to his career as a distinguished teacher and mentor to young artists. Lake Songs & Lighthouses – A Chautauqua Original Musical
Time: 7:30 pm
Lake Songs & Lighthouses features musical selections and large-screen projected photographs from Chautauqua’s historical musicals in addition to other original and familiar material.
