City, DEDA finalists for national economic development award

The City of Duluth and the Duluth Economic Development Authority are finalists for a 2008 U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration “Excellence in Economic Development” Award.

The City and DEDA are nominated for an Excellence in Economic Adjustment Strategies award for the program that established an aeronautical manufacturing cluster in Duluth. The EDA sponsors “Excellence in Economic Development” awards each year.

“Excellence Awards finalists represent the best and brightest in 21st century economic development,” said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Sandy K. Baruah. “These organizations are committed to building strategies for American regions to succeed in the global marketplace and create higher-skill, higher-wage jobs. President Bush, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and I appreciate the participation of the Duluth Economic Development Authority in our national awards program.”

“The growth of Cirrus Design Corporation, Northstar Aerospace, SCS Aircraft and many other companies is a real success story,” Duluth Mayor Don Ness said. “I’m very pleased that Duluth was nominated and am glad to see our efforts have received national recognition through reaching finalist status for an EDA award.”

Winners will be named Friday, with commemorative awards to be presented in the winning cities by senior Department of Commerce officials and members of the city’s congressional delegation.
