City of Duluth Today, Saturday

Duluth Parks and Recreation – The City of Duluth has temporarily closed Brighton Beach/Kitchi Gammi Park to the public through Sunday. The closure includes the portion of the Lakewalk that runs through the park.

The extensive rain has made the delicate turf and landscaping established after recent park and shoreline improvements more vulnerable to damage, and a temporary closure is necessary to protect the park’s natural resources.

On Monday, June 24, contractors will begin road construction through Brighton Beach. While the park will reopen to pedestrian access along the Lakewalk, users should expect heavy equipment and operators throughout the park during this project phase. Construction is expected to last through September 2024.

Once the park reopens on Monday, park users are asked to stick to paved and natural surface paths to limit damage to the park’s vulnerable turf and plantings.

Duluth Fire – Due to the high risk of rip currents today, the Duluth Fire Department is issuing a warning for dangerous swimming conditions for Park Point beaches effective immediately and continuing until 10 a.m. tomorrow.

This warning means that wind and wave conditions can support rip currents. Rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the water, so stay out of the water regardless of your swimming experience. Be advised that even calm waters after storm activity can support rip currents, so wait for warnings to expire.

Red flags are flying along the beach to indicate dangerous swimming conditions. You are advised to stay out of the water.

Flag locations are located at South Pier (South of Lift Bridge), 12th St beach, Lafayette Park, and two locations at Park Point beach. You will be notified if swimming conditions improve before this warning expires.

More information on conditions and rip currents can be found by visiting the Park Point Beach website at parkpointbeach.org.

Howie: Hermantown sets the standard for public education in Minnesota

In public education, trust is built through repetition — of performance, transparency and follow-through. Wayne Whitwam’s style reflects that understanding. He has avoided the temptation to overpromise, resisted reactionary pivots, and kept the district’s focus on instruction, people and systems.
