Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert will commemorate the inaugural season of the Duluth Harbor Monsters by hosting the team at City Hall and presenting a proclamation in the Mayor's Reception Room today at 1 p.m.
Subsequently, at 2 p.m., Reinert will join the leadership of the Chester Bowl Improvement Club for a major announcement at the Chester Bowl Chalet.
Public ceremonies like this one don’t always make the evening news. But they should. They are checkpoints in the life of a department that few of us notice until a siren wails down our street or a medic kneels over a loved one.
For now, give Reinert his due. The Auto Shoppers Ramp is finally going away, brick by stubborn brick, because he made it a priority. And if you squint past the dust, you can almost see a downtown Duluth that isn’t held together by plywood, nostalgia, and wishful thinking. Almost.

Authorities say Thorson later left the hospital without authorization, prompting a renewed search effort over the weekend.

Negotiations continue at Solvay Hospice House and Essentia Health Surgery Center-Miller Hill in Duluth. Two bargaining sessions were held this week, with additional meetings scheduled for Sept. 8 at Solvay and Sept. 10 at the Surgery Center.
