Police arrest Georgia man wanted there in connection with two killings and a violent carjacking

How safe is Duluth when individuals wanted for murder are being found and arrested in the city's core?

Authorities arrested a 20-year-old man with an extensive criminal history — including being wanted in Atlanta for two homicides and a carjacking — after executing a search warrant Wednesday in the 2000 block of West Second Street, raising renewed questions about violent offenders operating in Duluth neighborhoods.

The Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force, along with Duluth police and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, executed the warrant as part of an ongoing narcotics and weapons investigation, according to the Duluth Police Department.

Officers seized three firearms, 60 grams of fentanyl, $1,748 in cash and what investigators described as additional evidence of drug sales.

Kmauri Burnett, 20, was arrested without incident on a felony warrant and is also facing pending drug and weapons charges in Minnesota, police said.

Authorities say Burnett has a significant criminal history in Georgia and is wanted there in connection with two killings and a violent carjacking.

Duluth police lauded the coordination that led to the arrest, calling it a safe resolution in a potentially dangerous situation. But the incident — involving a suspect tied to violent crimes in another state — renewed the public question: How safe is Duluth and the core neighborhoods when individuals wanted for murder are being found and arrested in the city?

The department did not immediately say how long Burnett had been in Duluth or whether local officials were aware of his status prior to the investigation.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities said additional charges are possible.
