Essentia Health’s downtown Duluth hospitals ranked among the best in the nation

CMS’ ratings are based on how well a hospital performs across different areas of quality, like the patient experience, providing timely and effective care, readmission rates, mortality and safety.

As Essentia Health transitions to its replacement St. Mary’s Medical Center, patients can rest easy knowing they will be receiving care in one of the most highly ranked hospitals in the nation.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released 2023 ratings for health care facilities as part of its Care Compare program, and Essentia Health’s hospitals in downtown Duluth rank among the finest.

Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center and Essentia Health-Duluth both earned a five-star rating, the best possible score for a health care facility. Of the more than 4,600 hospitals rated nationwide by CMS, only about 10.4% garnered five stars. This is a direct result of Essentia's highly skilled care teams, including nurses, providers, technicians, therapists and others who live out it values every day and provide world-class care to its patients.

CMS’ ratings are based on how well a hospital performs across different areas of quality, like the patient experience, providing timely and effective care, readmission rates, mortality and safety.

“First and foremost, thank you to our exceptional teams and colleagues whose commitment to providing the highest quality health care in the communities we are privileged to serve shines brightly with these results,” said Dr. Bill Heegaard, Essentia’s East Market president. “The outstanding CMS ratings for St. Mary’s Medical Center and Essentia Health-Duluth demonstrate our ongoing commitment to continuously improving our patients’ and communities’ health and safety.”

This is the second consecutive year St. Mary’s Medical Center has received the highest possible rating. In addition to its two Duluth hospitals, Essentia Health-Fargo also earned five stars.

You can find the ratings for a variety of facilities on the Medicare Compare website.

CMS’ Care Compare website is one tool patients can use to research high-quality care. When making health care decisions, patients should use all the tools at their disposal, such as talking with friends and family as well as consulting with doctors, nurses and other trusted providers.

Rice Lake Road detour begins

Rice Lake Road in Duluth will be closed to through traffic between Central Entrance and Arrowhead Road beginning Monday. The closure is necessary for the replacement of a culvert on Chester Creek. The closure and detour is expected to last through August 20. Detour signs will be posted directing people to use Arrowhead Road, Arlington Avenue and Central Entrance for the duration of the project.

The only portion of Rice Lake Road that will be completely closed is between Arrowhead Road and Public Safety Drive (the entrance to the Public Safety Building, Hilltop Healthcare, and the Arrowhead Juvenile Center.) People can still access all other roads off of Rice Lake Road by traveling north from Central Entrance.

Milling and paving of Rice Lake Road will also occur during this time, and motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling in or near work zones. Residents will always have access to their property, but delays should be expected.

The culvert replacement is a joint project between St. Louis County and the South St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District. Funding for the culvert replacement is from a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant sponsored by the State of Minnesota and Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
