SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Minnesota Duluth surrendered two goals in 17 seconds late in regulation, forced overtime on Zam Plante’s tying goal and then lost 20 seconds into the extra period as Augustana upset the fifth-ranked Bulldogs 4-3 Friday night at Midco Arena.
The Bulldogs (2-1-0) led 2-1 heading into the final four minutes of regulation. Augustana beat UMD for the second time in three meetings over the past two seasons.
Landon Fandel tied the game at 16:49 of the third period, and Jacob Fletcher scored at 17:06 to put the Vikings ahead 3-2. Plante answered at 18:39, converting Jayson Shaugabay’s feed at the back door to send the game to overtime.
The reprieve was brief. Augustana scored just 20 seconds into overtime, ending a game in which UMD twice held one-goal leads.

Shaugabay assisted on two goals for his third consecutive multipoint game. He has a goal and six assists through three games.
Callum Arnott opened the scoring on a power play at 17:41 of the first period, finishing Shaugabay’s feed in front of the net. Freshman Victor Plante earned the secondary assist for his first collegiate point, but Augustana answered 50 seconds later to make it 1-1.
Barrett Hall restored UMD’s lead with 27 seconds remaining in the second period, redirecting Adam Kleber’s shot from the point. Hall has scored in each of his first three games with the Bulldogs.
UMD’s penalty kill remained unbeaten, holding Augustana scoreless on five opportunities and extending its season-opening streak to 15 successful kills. The Bulldogs went 1 for 2 on the power play, with Arnott scoring his second power-play goal of the season. He has both of UMD’s goals with the man advantage.
Augustana outshot the Bulldogs 30-28 and won 38 of 64 faceoffs. Ethan Dahlmeir made 26 saves for UMD, while Mathis Langevin stopped 25 shots for the Vikings.
Arnott has two goals and three assists through three games. Hunter Anderson and Ty Hanson each have a goal and four assists.

The teams finish the nonconference series Saturday at Midco Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m. Augustana leads the all-time series 2-1 after splitting two games at Amsoil Arena last season.

North Dakota 3, Bemidji State 2 — Cole Reschny scored twice, including the deciding goal with fewer than five minutes remaining, as fourth-ranked North Dakota (1-0-0) won its season opener in Bemidji. Will Zellers assisted on all three goals, and Mac Swanson scored on the power play. Freshman Cooper Simpson added his first collegiate assist for the Fighting Hawks.
Michigan Tech 3, St. Cloud State 2, OT — Teydon Trembecky scored his second goal of the game 2:09 into overtime as Michigan Tech (3-0-0) erased a two-goal deficit in St. Cloud. Reid Andresen tied it at 12:29 of the third period, and Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 32 saves. Gavyn Thoreson and Hayden Paupanekis scored for St. Cloud State (0-2-0), which outshot Tech 34-29.
Air Force 5, St. Thomas 1 — Dominik Wasik made 43 saves and Nick Sajevic scored twice as Air Force (1-0-0) spoiled St. Thomas’ home opener in St. Paul. Ren Morque, Christian Kim and Sam Stitz also scored for the Falcons, who finished with two empty-net goals. Jakub Altrichter scored shorthanded for the Tommies (0-1-0), who held a 44-28 advantage in shots.

Holy Cross 2, Arizona State 1 — Quinn McCall and Ben Riche scored 11 seconds apart in the final 1:26 as Holy Cross (2-1-0) rallied in Tempe, Arizona. Danick Leroux stopped 39 shots for the Crusaders. Daniel Shlaine had given Arizona State (1-2-0) the lead with 5:02 remaining, but the Sun Devils lost despite outshooting Holy Cross 40-22.
Western Michigan 5, Ferris State 1 — Adam Benák collected four assists and Quentin Miller made 21 saves as eighth-ranked Western Michigan (2-0-0) completed a two-game sweep in Big Rapids, Michigan. Bobby Cowan and Zaccharya Wisdom each contributed a goal and an assist for the Broncos. Adyn Merrick scored on the power play for Ferris State (0-3-1).
Michigan 10, Alaska Anchorage 1 — Cole McKinney scored twice and added two assists, and Nick Moldenhauer had a goal and three assists as second-ranked Michigan (3-0-0) rolled in Ann Arbor. Jack Nesbitt scored his first two collegiate goals, and Jack Ivankovic made 21 saves. The Wolverines scored five times in the third period and outshot Alaska Anchorage (0-3-0) 47-22.
Michigan State 6, Northern Michigan 2 — Anthony Romani scored twice and added an assist as third-ranked Michigan State (1-0-0) opened its season with a home victory in East Lansing. The Spartans scored four power-play goals and killed all five Northern Michigan opportunities. Joshua Ravensbergen made 16 saves against the Wildcats (1-2-0).
Wisconsin 4, Minnesota State 0 — Alexis Cournoyer stopped all 13 shots he faced as seventh-ranked Wisconsin (3-0-0) shut out Minnesota State (0-1-0) in Mankato. Brent Solomon scored his first collegiate goal, and Oliver Tulk added another 39 seconds later to give the Badgers a 2-0 first-period lead. Logan Hensler and Grady Deering also scored as Wisconsin finished with a 35-13 advantage in shots.

Notre Dame 4, Niagara 0 — Evan Werner scored twice and Nicholas Kempf recorded a shutout as Notre Dame (2-0-0) completed a two-game sweep in South Bend, Indiana. Pano Fimis and Will Belle also scored for the Irish, who broke a scoreless tie with two second-period goals before adding two empty-netters in the third. Niagara fell to 1-3-0.
Connecticut 3, Penn State 1 — Kam Hendrickson made 42 saves as Connecticut (1-0-0) defeated Penn State (0-1-0) in an Ice Breaker Tournament game in Storrs, Connecticut. Joey Muldowney broke a 1-1 tie at 15:35 of the second period, and Kaden Shahan added an empty-net goal. William McIsaac also scored for the Huskies. Kale Dach scored for Penn State, which outshot Connecticut 43-25.
RPI 3, Ohio State 0 — Nate Krawchuk made 36 saves and Rainers Rullers scored twice as RPI (1-0-0) defeated Ohio State (0-1-0) in Troy, New York. Filip Sitar opened the scoring in the first period, and Rullers added a second-period goal and a late empty-netter. Krawchuk stopped seven shots during a five-minute Ohio State power play in the second period.
Colorado College 4, U.S. Under-18 Team 1, exhibition — Klavs Veinbergs and Tomas Mrsic scored twice apiece as Colorado College won in Colorado Springs. Connor Hvidston and Wilson Björck each had two assists, and Jackson Unger made 19 saves. The exhibition did not count toward the Tigers’ regular-season record.
