Minnesota's high school football championship picture changed considerably Wednesday night, with several of the state's highest-ranked teams suffering defeats, undefeated seasons ending and new contenders making convincing statements before the playoffs.
The biggest result came in Class 5A, where second-ranked Monticello defeated No. 1 Elk River 36-29 in a showdown of unbeaten teams. In Class 6A, eighth-ranked Blaine edged No. 4 Centennial 10-8, while Rosemount defeated sixth-ranked Eagan 28-6 and Mounds View upset No. 5 Forest Lake 14-3.
Class 2A delivered another major surprise when Luverne defeated top-ranked Jackson County Central 36-30. The seventh-ranked Cardinals' victory provided further evidence that the race for the state championship will be anything but predictable.
Meanwhile, Class 6A No. 1 Moorhead continued its high-scoring season with a 48-28 victory over St. Michael-Albertville, second-ranked Champlin Park crushed Lakeville North 36-7 and third-ranked Eden Prairie overwhelmed Eastview 56-8.
The games provided a final test for most teams ahead of postseason competition, with section tournament positioning and momentum now carrying greater importance than regular-season rankings.
Class 6A: Moorhead rolls, challengers stumble
Moorhead remains the team to beat in Minnesota's largest classification. The Spuds improved to 7-0 with their victory over St. Michael-Albertville, continuing an offensive surge that has made them the state's most formidable scoring machine.
Champlin Park also remained undefeated, advancing to 7-0 with its 29-point victory over Lakeville North. Eden Prairie rebounded from its previous loss to Moorhead with a 48-point victory over Eastview.
The more revealing results came elsewhere. Blaine's two-point victory over Centennial demonstrated that the Cougars' defense, among the state's best throughout the season, was not enough to protect their lofty ranking.
Forest Lake's 14-3 loss to Mounds View represented another upset, while Eagan's 22-point defeat against Rosemount exposed the Wildcats' vulnerability after entering the game with one of the state's strongest defensive records.
Minnetonka continued its recovery with a 35-6 victory over Edina, but White Bear Lake suffered a 36-28 loss to Woodbury.
The classification's championship race remains wide open behind Moorhead and Champlin Park, particularly with Eden Prairie, Blaine, Minnetonka and several dangerous unranked teams capable of influencing the tournament.

The playoff picture
Wednesday's results provided a reminder that rankings become less important as the postseason approaches. The biggest questions now involve which teams can sustain their success through increasingly difficult competition.
Moorhead and Champlin Park remain the marquee programs in Class 6A. Monticello made a persuasive argument for the top position in Class 5A, while Orono continued to look like a legitimate championship favorite in Class 4A.
Class 3A remains exceptionally deep, and the defeat of Jackson County Central in Class 2A could give Caledonia and Redwood Valley additional confidence entering the playoffs.
Minnesota's Class 1A and nine-player tournaments also promise competitive championship races, with multiple undefeated programs carrying impressive offensive and defensive performances into the postseason.
The state's strongest teams have spent the regular season building their reputations. What matters now is whether they can protect them when every game becomes an elimination game.
