CLOQUET — The score every team will chase at Friday’s Steve Anderson Legacy Foundation Scramble has stood for seven years.
Cathy Erickson, Jeff Sundin, Ryan Bakken, Sami Mattson, Eric Berquist and Faron Meeks established the tournament record with a 20-under-par 51 on Aug. 30, 2019, at Nemadji Golf Course. Matt Mellin, Maddie Schintz, Paul Schintz, Amy Schintz, Ryan Peterson and Billy Seitz matched the record the following year at Cloquet Country Club.
Both record-setting groups will be represented when the six-player scramble celebrates its 15th year Friday, Sept. 4, at Cloquet Country Club. The tournament will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Mellin, Paul Schintz, Amy Schintz, Maddie Schintz and Seitz — five members of the 2020 championship team — will play together again. Taylor Sundbom will captain that group.
Erickson will captain a team that includes Curt Wilson, Nate Beckman, Bob Johansen, George Ward III and Darrin Young.
The current pairing sheet lists 30 teams, with three positions still listed as open. The field represents the largest in tournament history and continues the steady growth of an event that drew 29 teams when Erickson’s group established the scoring record in 2019.
The tournament began in 2012 following Anderson’s death at age 59. It has become an annual gathering of his family members, former teammates, players, friends and golfers who knew him during a Northland athletic career that extended from Duluth Denfeld through Wisconsin-Superior and several area golf courses.
Anderson graduated from Denfeld in 1971 after serving as a captain and letter winner in hockey, football and baseball. At Wisconsin-Superior, he captained the hockey, baseball and golf teams, helped the Yellowjackets win the 1976 NAIA national hockey championship and earned All-America recognition in baseball.
He was inducted into the Wisconsin-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Anderson later worked as a golf professional at four Northland courses. His final position was at Ridgeview Country Club, where he worked alongside his son, Aaron.
Aaron Anderson will captain the first team Friday. His group includes Anderson’s widow, Nancy, along with Wade Freeman, Jen Freeman, Kamryn Hill and Karin Hill.
