Rice Lake Road detour begins August 7

Rice Lake Road in Duluth will be closed to through traffic between Central Entrance and Arrowhead Road beginning Monday, August 7. The closure is necessary for the replacement of a culvert on Chester Creek.

The closure and detour is expected to last through August 20. Detour signs will be posted directing people to use Arrowhead Road, Arlington Avenue and Central Entrance for the duration of the project.

The only portion of Rice Lake Road that will be completely closed is between Arrowhead Road and Public Safety Drive (the entrance to the Public Safety Building, Hilltop Healthcare, and the Arrowhead Juvenile Center.) People can still access all other roads off of Rice Lake Road by traveling north from Central Entrance.

Milling and paving of Rice Lake Road will also occur during this time, and motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling in or near work zones. Residents will always have access to their property, but delays should be expected.

The culvert replacement is a joint project between St. Louis County and the South St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District. Funding for the culvert replacement is from a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant sponsored by the State of Minnesota and Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council

Howie: The verdict on Reinert will be about direction, not personality

The question is no longer simply whether Roger Reinert deserves another term. The question is whether Duluth believes it is on the path it wants — and if not, who has the discipline, clarity and courage to alter it. November 2027 will deliver the verdict. The work of deciding it begins now.

Essentia’s downtown campus functions as a Level I trauma center — the highest designation available — meaning it must have surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons and critical care specialists available at all hours. Not on call from home. Available.
