Duluth will take another major step toward hosting one of international hockey’s premier events when USA Hockey and local organizers unveil details for the 2027 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.
A community kickoff will introduce the 10 nations scheduled to compete in the tournament, release the competition schedule and provide information about tickets and opportunities for local residents to become involved.
The world championship will be held April 21-May 2, 2027, with all 29 games — from preliminary-round play through the medal games — scheduled for AMSOIL Arena.
The tournament will bring many of the world’s best players under age 18 to Duluth for nearly two weeks of international competition, providing northeastern Minnesota hockey fans an opportunity to watch elite prospects representing some of the sport’s strongest national programs.
Youth hockey players from the Duluth Amateur Hockey Association and surrounding communities will participate in the kickoff by helping introduce the 10 competing nations.
The program also will include a tournament video presentation and remarks about the significance of bringing the championship to Duluth and Minnesota’s broader hockey community.
The Under-18 world championship annually provides an early international showcase for players who frequently become high NHL draft selections and future college, professional and Olympic standouts.
For Duluth, landing the entire tournament at AMSOIL Arena gives the city another opportunity to demonstrate its ability to host major hockey events while attracting players, coaches, scouts, families and fans from around the world.
Unlike tournaments spread among multiple arenas or host communities, every game of the 2027 championship will be played at AMSOIL Arena.
That means Duluth will serve as the center of the tournament from the opening faceoff through the gold-medal game.
The event also figures to provide an economic boost during what traditionally is a quieter tourism period between winter and the beginning of Duluth’s summer travel season. Hotels, restaurants, downtown businesses and other attractions will have the opportunity to serve international visitors and hockey fans over the 12-day tournament.
The community kickoff will provide the first detailed look at what Duluth hockey fans can expect, including which countries will compete, when they will play and how tickets will be sold.
Organizers also are expected to outline opportunities for volunteers and other community participation.
For local youth players, the tournament offers something considerably more personal.
Some of the players they will watch at AMSOIL Arena next April will be only a few years older than they are, yet already competing among the best young hockey players in the world.
For Duluth, it will be international hockey played on one of the city’s most familiar stages.
And beginning with the community kickoff, the countdown to April 21 officially begins.
