Hawks hockey, boys basketball coast to victories

It was a productive Friday night for Hermantown High sports teams, who picked up convincing victories on the ice and the basketball court.

In boys hockey, Beau Christy recorded a hat trick as Hermantown shut out host East Grand Forks 5-0.

After a scoreless first period, Christy put the Hawks on the board 38 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal and added a second later in the frame. Hermantown broke the game open early in the third period with three goals in a little more than two minutes, including Christy’s third of the night on another power play.

Bryce Francisco turned aside 23 shots to earn his second shutout of the season as Hermantown controlled play down the stretch against the defending Class A state champions.

Earlier in the evening, Hermantown’s boys basketball team overwhelmed Cloquet 94-56 on the road, leaning heavily on long-range shooting.

The Hawks connected on 18 3-pointers, with Sawyer Senst leading the way with 22 points. Corbin Petcoff and Noah Schulz scored 18 points apiece, each knocking down five shots from beyond the arc. Shea Eckel added 12 points, including four 3-pointers, as Hermantown improved to 5-11.

Evan Rothamel scored 21 points to lead Cloquet, which dropped to 8-9.
