The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce will mark its 155th year with its annual meeting and dinner Oct. 30 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

The event, titled Forging the Future: Innovation, Industry, and International Impact, will feature keynote speaker Russ Becker, president and chief executive officer of APi Group.

Becker, a native of Minnesota’s Iron Range, leads the New Brighton–based business services provider that operates more than 200 locations worldwide. APi delivers safety, specialty and industrial solutions across multiple industries.

Several APi companies are rooted in Northeast Minnesota, including Chamber members Jamar Company, Viking Automatic Sprinkler Co. and United Piping. Organizers said Becker’s address will highlight how the region’s strengths influence industry globally.

The Chamber will also recognize award winners for contributions to the organization and the local business community.

Safe Haven expands efforts to support students and survivors

For many students, the new school year is a time of excitement — new teachers, fresh supplies and the chance to start again. For others, particularly children living with the effects of domestic violence, the transition is filled with uncertainty and stress.

Safe Haven Shelter and Resource Center is working to bridge that gap with its annual Back to School Supply Drive and a community celebration later this month. The Back to School Bash is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wussow’s Concert Café. The family event will include live music from Dan the Monkey Man and provide opportunities for residents to donate supplies.

Safe Haven officials say the drive is about more than pencils and notebooks. Children exposed to violence at home are more likely to face emotional struggles, learning difficulties and long-term health impacts. Something as simple as a backpack, they said, can help restore a sense of dignity and stability.

The organization’s focus will extend into October, when Domestic Violence Awareness Month brings a series of events highlighting survivor stories and encouraging community involvement.

The centerpiece is Safe Haven’s 20th Annual Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Clyde Iron Works. The evening fundraiser will feature a cocktail hour, sit-down dinner, live music and a raffle. Proceeds will support programs that provide emergency shelter, advocacy and long-term resources for survivors.

Tickets for the October event are available online, and the public can also reach out to Safe Haven at outreach@safehavenshelter.org for details.

Community members are encouraged to attend either or both events, donate supplies, and wear purple in October to raise awareness.

Howie: Just make sure I get my check on Friday

Silence is the danger here. Duluth is a city where speaking the truth gets you branded an alarmist. Shut up, smile and nod along while your neighbors drown. That’s how the people in power like it. Just the steady rhythm of their Friday checks clearing while the walls cave in around everyone else.
