16-year-old girl injured in ATV crash near Hibbing

HIBBING — A 16-year-old girl was injured Saturday afternoon when the all-terrain vehicle she was driving rolled over in the Silica area, just south of Hibbing.

According to authorities, emergency responders were dispatched around 12:03 p.m. to the scene of the crash. A preliminary investigation found that the 16-year-old was operating a Yamaha Kodiak 700 ATV on a minimum maintenance road when the vehicle caught the shoulder, struck a tree and overturned into a ditch.

Two other juveniles, ages 16 and 14, were passengers on the ATV at the time of the crash. They were not reported to be injured.

The driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Hibbing with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening.

None of the juveniles were wearing helmets, law enforcement said. Investigators believe limited ATV operating experience may have contributed to the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
