Marshall, Stella Maris announce five-program cooperative agreement

DULUTH — Marshall School and Stella Maris Academy will combine students in five athletic and extracurricular programs beginning with the 2026-27 school year under cooperative agreements approved by both schools.

The partnership will include girls basketball, baseball, softball, boys lacrosse and robotics, expanding participation opportunities for students at the two Duluth private schools.

Marshall will serve as the host school for girls basketball and boys lacrosse for students in grades 7-12 and robotics for students in grades 9-12. Stella Maris will host baseball and softball for students in grades 7-12.

The cooperative agreements remain subject to final approval by the Minnesota State High School League.

School officials said the arrangement is designed to strengthen programs by combining enrollment, resources and participation while creating additional opportunities for students at both schools.

The agreement also represents a broader collaboration between two Duluth schools that have traditionally operated separate athletic and extracurricular programs.

Marshall is an independent K-12 day and boarding school in Duluth with a 122-year history. The school operates Forest School, Middle School and Upper School programs and reported that its 63-member Class of 2026 earned more than $16 million in scholarships.

Stella Maris Academy is a Catholic school serving approximately 750 students from early childhood through grade 12. The academy recently expanded into high school education, creating a continuous early childhood-through-12th-grade program.

The central question surrounding this transaction should therefore not be why HealthPartners isn't writing Essentia a check. The better question is what Duluth, Essentia’s patients and its employees receive in exchange for surrendering the institution’s independence.
