Quote Me, Howie

On the Vikings' 2-0 start:

Don Ness – "Let's start with the most important fact first: shout out to C.J. Ham for the play of the game. His punt block was a massive play. He continues to make us proud. An excellent team win, it probably should have been a larger margin of victory if not for a few bad-luck plays. (Sam) Darnold is looking good – a couple of absolute dimes. In the play where Darnold escaped pressure and ran for the first down, the contrasting image of Kirk tripping in the backfield for an 8-yard loss immediately came to mind. The defense is emerging in Flores' vision. The secondary is holding up (mostly), but that continues to be the weakness for the squad. I'm just glad this will be a competitive team, and they're fun to watch. The rest of the division is NOT leaping forward as we thought, so a division title might be possible."

Fred Friedman – "I love it when I am wrong about the Vikings and when the Cowboys lose. Only in the NFL can Mike Zimmer keep getting hired but Brian Flores get blackballed. Rather than yell at the Twins through my television, I’ll watch the Vikings lose a tough game Sunday against Houston and the best defense in football including Daniel Hunter. Frankly, they beat up the Bears last Sunday evening. I’m just hoping to avoid injuries, which all too often defines success in our modern version of ancient gladiator fights for the masses."

Mike Zagelmeyer – "I am tremendously surprised the Vikings are 2-0. I would never have guessed that coming into the season. So yes, I am one of those doubters. While this two-game stretch has caught my attention, I am still somewhat skeptical. There is still a long season ahead, and they are pretty banged up now, so 3-0 will be difficult. However, if you are a Vikings fan, that was a great win. And although McCaffrey didn't play, the Niners are a very good team. Enjoy the ride and the 2-0 start, I guess."

Erik Lofald – "Just how I drew it up! KOC getting the best out of Sam Darnold. B Flo coming up with schemes that have offenses confused. Great running game…and of course Jets is balling out! Clean up the penalties and turnovers and I’ll be looking like a genius after picking them to make the playoffs in the preseason."

Daniel Fanning – "Another impressive team victory with solid play from Sam Darnold and the offense, especially strong and aggressive performance on the defensive side of the ball, and special teams contributing to the win as well. Awesome to see Duluth native C.J. Ham block a punt early on in the game, which really helped set the tone. The home crowd and strategic coaching deserve credit as well. They’ll have another tough challenge next week when they host the Texans, but the Vikings are proving they can hold their own against anyone."

Tom Elwell – "Sam Darnold didn't disappoint anybody on Sunday. He threw for 268 yards and completed 17 of 26 passes in the Vikings' 23-27 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Darnold had two touchdowns and one interception and added five carries for 32 yards. He also committed two fumbles, recovering one. The Niners were lucky the score was so close. They were out-played. Darnold wasn't as efficient as last week when he misfired on only five pass attempts. The highlight of the game was Darnold and Jefferson setting an all-time Viking record connecting on a 97-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass in Viking history. Darnold was sacked three times by a stingy 49er defense that jarred the ball loose twice. Are Viking fans happy with Darnold as the new quarterback? He's no Kirk Cousins and most of us are happy about that. Darnold seems like a winner given a chance. He's off to a great start so far. Darnold is a 'veteran rookie, so to speak, and he's got something to prove."

Howie: Bayfront still may be Duluth’s best idea

Bayfront remains one of the few places where the city still functions the way a healthy city is supposed to function: as a shared public space where people continue gathering together because they genuinely want to be there. Every summer, Duluth remembers that again.

Howie: While others talked revival, Gary Doty did the work

Survival, for many old industrial American cities during the late twentieth century, became the central challenge itself. Doty helped Duluth survive long enough to rediscover confidence in itself again. That is not a minor civic legacy.

Howie: Minnesota’s political civil war weekend

The emotional political truth in Minnesota: The DFL fears permanently losing working-class and regional voters. Republicans fear nominating candidates who thrill activists but collapse in the suburbs. Both fears are real.
