Quote Me, Howie: On Roger Reinert's mayoral work

Gary Doty – "I appreciate that Mayor Roger Reinert has taken on the non-partisan job of mayor just as he should by doing what is best for the citizens of Duluth and not what a political party or any other organization is demanding. While certain groups may not be happy with him on certain issues, I believe the vast majority of people are pleased that he is concentrating on city issues and meeting them head on. I appreciate that the mayor is acknowledging upfront a budget problem in the future and beginning the budget process early. That is called leadership. He has assembled an excellent staff and I believe the mayor and that staff will solve the budget problem and provide the city services that citizens as well as large and small business owners expect."

Nick Patronas – "I am happy with Roger’s first year in office. He has had to fill in so many administration positions and stop the poor job from the prior administration. Streets are cleaner, less panhandling, there is an upbeat vibrating throughout our great town. That being said, knowing Roger, and in talking to him, he is nowhere satisfied. We are lucky to have him as our captain of the ship (city). If we could get some state reps. to start pulling their weight, and the council to start concerning itself about Duluth issues, he could grow Duluth, create jobs, and get housing for all. Best of luck to a good man."

For years, America subtly treated trade education as a secondary path for students who supposedly could not “make it” academically. That narrative now looks outdated and borderline absurd. Many technical programs are competitive, mathematically rigorous and tied to industries starving for talent.

No single institution controls the public conversation anymore. The region now operates inside a decentralized information economy where television owns immediacy, newspapers own documentation, Facebook owns emotional momentum and independent publishers increasingly own personality-driven loyalty.

Howie: Duluth moves beyond emergency shelter thinking

Serious cities eventually discover homelessness sits at the intersection of housing costs, addiction, mental illness, family collapse, poverty and social isolation. Remove one piece while ignoring the others and the system keeps recycling human beings through crisis.
