Important Things to Know, from legendary Duluth City Councilor Arik Forsman (Source: Forsman's blog):

. The proposed condo project in Woodland was unanimously approved by the Planning Commission earlier this week. It goes to council in April.

. Proposals for what to do with the Lester Park Golf Course property will be coming to council this spring. I am hopeful by what I’ve heard through the grapevine, and for the first time in years, have some cautious optimism we might find a path forward that would alter the current trajectory we’re on (taller weeds and still no golf).

. The Duluth Police Department held their annual commendation ceremony last week to honor the best of Duluth’s finest. Shoutout to my friend Dana Letica and Councilor Randorf’s son Spencer Pitzel, as well as everyone else, for earning awards in recognition of their important work in our community.

. For many years, I’ve usually eaten lunch at the Subway in the skywalk. It permanently closed this week. Anecdotally, what was already a noticeable lack of foot traffic in the skywalk since Covid fell to a new low in the days following Subway’s closure. The city administration continues to make progress on starting the skywalk study that was authorized by the council in late February.

. Election season has begun! Councilor Tara Swenson was first out of the gate announcing her re-election bid earlier in March. My take: I’ve known Councilor Swenson since we served on a board together in our early-mid 20’s. She has been a phenomenal city councilor. I am supporting her and hope folks in the Heights, Lincoln Park, and Piedmont will do the same.

“The most encouraging thing, in my eyes, was the fact that no matter which five guys we had on the floor, no matter the score, they were playing their hearts out.” -- Hermantown boys basketball coach Andy Fenske
