Grand Rapids spoiled Hermantown’s homecoming Friday night, handing the Hawks their first loss of the season in a 34-20 Northeast Red high school football game.

Hermantown (4-1, 3-1) erased an early 13-0 deficit and took a 20-19 lead in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Martin Sleen, but the Thunderhawks (4-1, 3-0) answered with three straight touchdowns in the fourth to put it away.

Sleen carried 21 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hawks. Quarterback Sawyer Senst went 6-for-14 for 70 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Grant Johnson. Johnson finished with three catches for 53 yards.

Grand Rapids controlled the game up front, rushing for 297 yards on 46 attempts. Mason Johnson scored twice on short runs, and quarterback Oliver Spahn added a 10-yard touchdown.

Hermantown was held to 208 total yards and just seven points after halftime.

The Hawks visit nonconference Esko at 5 p.m. Friday.

The Hawks play two matches on the road: Wednesday at Duluth East, 5:30 p.m. at Ordean Stadium, and Thursday at Duluth Denfeld, 6:30 p.m. at Marv Heikkinen Field.

Girls Soccer
Hermantown hosts Proctor on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Centricity Stadium, then visits Duluth East on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. match at Ordean Stadium.

Volleyball
The Hawks face Grand Rapids on the road Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Girls Tennis
Hermantown opens postseason play Tuesday in the Section 7AA quarterfinals. The Hawks also compete in the individual section tournament Thursday at Cloquet.

Girls Swimming & Diving
Proctor/Hermantown travels to Hibbing on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Cross Country
Hermantown competes in the Swain Invitational on Saturday at Enger Park Golf Course. The girls and boys varsity races both start at 10 a.m.
