St. Louis County adds in-person property tax payment option in Hibbing

With the May 15 property tax payment due date coming soon, the St. Louis County Auditor's and Recorder's offices have partnered to offer a new in-person payment option for property owners in the Hibbing area. In-person tax payments can now be made at the Hibbing Courthouse at the Recorder’s Office service window, 1810 12th Avenue East, Room 100, in Hibbing.

The office will accept tax payments via money order or check payable to the St. Louis County Auditor, or cash (United States currency only). Tax payments for other types of properties with different payment deadlines also can paid at the Hibbing Recorder's Office.

"We are hoping that this service will provide additional convenience for our northern residents who would like to make a payment in person, speak to a friendly and customer service-oriented employee, and get some basic questions answered," said Mary Garness, Public Records and Property Valuation Director. “This is another example of departments working together towards a goal of focusing on our people, their needs, and finding ways through cross training to improve our services throughout the entire county without increasing overall costs for providing services.”

For property owners who haven't made arrangements to pay taxes through escrow, the Auditor's Office offers a variety of ways people can pay, including a no-fee online option.

Property owners can pay online for free at stlouiscountymn.gov/propertytaxes by selecting the eCheck/Bank Account Payment method. Other online payment options are available but will include a fee, including using a credit or debit card, PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Checks can be mailed to the St. Louis County Auditor's Office, 100 N. 5th Ave. W., Room 214, Duluth, MN 55802-1293. Mail must be postmarked by May 15 to avoid a late fee.

In addition to the Hibbing location, in-person person payments can be made at any of the Auditor's Offices at the Courthouse in Duluth, Auditor's Service Center at the Miller Hill Mall, or the Government Services Center in Virginia. Drop boxes are available at these three locations for after hour payments or for anyone not wishing to come inside the building.

Payment by phone is currently not available.

Information on all of these payment options, as well as links to access programs that may lower a property owner's taxes can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/propertytaxes. People with questions also can call the St. Louis County Auditor's Office at 218-726-2383.
