Tara Swenson will announce her candidacy for reelection to the nine-member Duluth City Council, representing District 4, on Tuesday afternoon.

“Duluth is an incredible place to live, work and raise a family," Swenson said in a campaign press release, distributed by email Monday morning. "Over the past year, we have made significant progress in public safety, expanding housing options, and improving core city services. I am looking forward to building on this foundation and continue serving our community.”

According to her press release, Swenson’s priorities for her next term include:

. Public Safety: Ensuring every resident and visitor feels safe by supporting well-trained and well-equipped first responders, including police, fire, and EMS.

. Infrastructure: Prioritizing critical needs like street maintenance, pothole repairs, and improved snow removal, while upgrading and protecting parks and spaces where families and children can safely gather and enjoy activities.

. Economic Growth: Supporting initiatives that bring good-paying jobs to Duluth and foster long-term economic stability.

“Everyone who lives in or visits Duluth should feel safe,” said Swenson. “By supporting our first responders, prioritizing economic development, and creating a welcoming environment for both residents and businesses, we can ensure Duluth thrives as a vibrant, inclusive, and safe community.”

Swenson and her husband and their children, ages 5 and 7, reside in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood.

Two at-large (Azrin Awal, Terese Tomanek) and the District 2 (Mike Mayou) and 4 (Swenson) seats will be up for grabs this fall.

The 2025 election filing period runs from May 20 to June 3. The primary election is scheduled for August 12 and the general election November 4.

In public education, trust is built through repetition — of performance, transparency and follow-through. Wayne Whitwam’s style reflects that understanding. He has avoided the temptation to overpromise, resisted reactionary pivots, and kept the district’s focus on instruction, people and systems.
