Tim Cortes, a nationally renowned commemorative sports artist in Duluth, has opened a studio at Essentia Duluth Heritage Center in Clyde Park. Through a special arrangement with the EDHC’s Board of Directors, he will perform and display his colored pencil creations in the EDHC’s Warming House, a 900 square foot area located above the Sill Arena mezzanine.

The studio displays a variety of Cortes’ work, with some prints being offered for purchase.

“We’re excited about having Tim display his artwork in our facility," said Steve Kirk, Essentia Duluth Heritage Center's general manager. "It’s one more unique offering that visitors will find when they visit Duluth and Clyde Park.”

Cortes clients are among the “Who’s who” in the sports world, with a special emphasis on hockey. His work has attracted the attention of players, coaches, teams and owners who want to commemorate their careers, among them the Minnesota Twins, commemorating their three World Series appearances and the University of Notre Dame to commemorate 125 years of football.

Locally, Cortes art may be found at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, the University of Minnesota Duluth and Duluth East High School, where as a student he starred in both football and hockey. He also designed the eight values banners displayed on the exterior of Essentia Duluth Heritage Center walls and featured in Minnesota Hockey Magazine. The Tim Cortes Art Studio West is open to the public during most of the events and any day by appointment.

Howie: The city budget they don't want you to understand

Local Government Aid alone covers nearly $35 million, about one-third of the budget. It’s the difference between black ink and red. Lose even 5 percent of that aid, and Duluth’s “balanced” budget implodes by millions. That’s not financial strength — that’s dependence disguised as stability.

Build North Expo headed to the Heritage Center

“Two things we’ve heard constantly over the years are that people want to start planning and building earlier in the year, and that they want to connect with experts who can take them from start to finish on their projects. That’s what the Build North Expo will do.” -- ABA's Lindsey Whitlinger
