Minnesota makes cuts, Michigan and Beaumont add depth

A wave of roster activity hit Arena Football One on Thursday as teams across the league finalized midweek adjustments.

Minnesota released three players while adding three others, Albany issued a league suspension, and Michigan and Beaumont each bolstered their offensive units with new signings.

Minnesota moved on from defensive back Clarence Taylor III (LA Harbor College), quarterback William Walters (Columbia College) and defensive back Ponce DeLeon (Shepherd College). The franchise countered with three additions: wide receiver Donovan Johnson (Concordia University), linebacker Dontorian Best (Wingate University) and wide receiver Andre Williams (Dean College).

Albany quarterback Ja’Rome Johnson, a former Bowie State standout, was placed on league suspension. The Empire signed former Auburn defensive lineman Morris Joseph Jr. to reinforce the defensive front.

Beaumont strengthened its offensive line with the signing of Mike Brown, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound tackle from West Virginia.

Michigan also made a single move, adding wide receiver Kenny Brewer, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound product of Central Michigan.

The AF1 season begins in early 2026, with rosters still fluid as clubs continue shaping depth charts ahead of training camps.

Howie: AF1 opens with Albany atop Fan Zone rankings

The structure of the opening weekend leaves little room for gradual buildup. For Albany, it is a chance to reaffirm its position. For Minnesota and the rest of the field, it is an early test of whether preseason projections hold or begin to shift.

Tom Pohlad has continued to express a commitment to winning, but the roster construction has yet to reflect that urgency. The absence of a clear replacement for Pablo Lopez, combined with instability at shortstop and in the bullpen, suggests a team operating below the standard required to contend.
