The current 2025 budget swelled to a record $474 million in spending even as the General Fund slid to $109 million, with the property-tax levy climbing to $43.4 million — a 13 percent jump from just three years earlier. On paper, Duluth has never spent more. Howie / HowieHanson.com

A windfall of state aid helped soften the edges. Local Government Aid jumped by $4.4 million in 2024, the largest increase in more than two decades and the equivalent of a double-digit property-tax hike. The city collected $35.2 million in aid in 2025, nearly one-third of its General Fund.

Howie: 2025 Spirit of Duluth tourney the first without Bill Oswald

This December, Bill Oswald's seat at the table will be empty, but his fingerprints will be on every shift, every goal, every frazzled parent clutching a cup of bad coffee. The Spirit of Duluth is back. It never really left. And he wouldn’t want it any other way.

Howie: Thielen’s back

The real story is simple: the Vikings needed a guy who knows the offense and won’t panic on third-and-six. Nostalgia just happened to be the bonus prize.

Howie: Fred Friedman, one of Minnesota's Greatest Giants

I’ve met many people eager to be called heroes. Fred is the opposite. He shrugs away attention. He’d rather talk about his students than himself. But the truth is this: Fred Friedman is the greatest man I’ve ever met in my career — a hero who never wanted the title.

Howie: Hawks’ Sleen, Perich comparisons obligatory

This is precisely how the Koi Perich saga began. Esko’s Swiss Army knife was suddenly the kid everyone wanted to talk about, and before you knew it, P.J. Fleck’s staff was tripping over themselves to lock him down.
