Kristy McGiffert has been named Marshall School's new athletic director, following a competitive national search that included more than 50 applicants. She will replace Kevin Snyder, who is retiring from the position at the end of June. McGiffert has served as a faculty member, class dean, coach, and parent at Marshall. "McGiffert brings a wealth of experience and community connections to the position, which will help as we create energy and enthusiasm around Marshall’s athletic programs and build the pipeline of incoming athletes,” Marshall Head of School Anthony Pisapia said in a press release.

Breaking News: Two-vehicle crash on Jean Duluth Road - Rice Lake

On May 22, 2025 at approximately 04:05 p.m., a motor vehicle crash was reported just south on West Tisher Road on Jean Duluth Road in the city of Rice Lake.  Sheriff's deputies responded along with the Rice Lake Fire Department and the St. Louis County Sheriff's Volunteer Rescue Squad.

A 2000 Ford Explorer was northbound on Jean Duluth Road (occupied by two people), and a 2014 Subaru Outback was southbound (just one person). Witnesses observed the Subaru cross the centerline and strike the Ford head-on. The driver of the Subaru and the passenger of the Explorer were treated on scene and transported to the hospital by Mayo Ambulance. The driver of the Subaru showed signs of alcohol impairment, and a DUI investigation is underway. –  St. Louis County Sherriff's Office press release

The AAD Shrine Glow Circus Spectacular will hold three performances at the DECC's Amsoil Arena on June 28-29. Signature acts will include the Human Cannonball, BMX riders, the Motorcycle Globe of Steel, aerial performers, and archery demonstrations.

Downtown Duluth

Duluth Police responded to a report of an individual who was stabbed near Lake Avenue and Superior Street earlier today. The male victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Mayo Ambulance to a local hospital, according to a Duluth Police press release. The victim and suspect are known to each other, and the suspect was taken into custody.

Duluth FC will visit Minneapolis City SC in a friendly men's soccer match on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. The BlueGreens are 1-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the National Premier Soccer League, and will return home for 7 p.m. matches against Minnesota Blizzard FC on Tuesday and Iowa next Saturday at Walt Hunting Stadium in West Duluth.

Effective immediately, the Duluth Public Library Downtown Branch is closing early to allow City of Duluth plumbers space to correct a plumbing issue. The facility is expected to reopen at its usual time tomorrow.
