Events planned to highlight Gun Violence Awareness Month

Table of Contents

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and inspire change to save lives.

Multiple people and organizations in the Northland are teaming up this year to share messages about promoting use of gun locks and encouraging conversations about safe storage of firearms.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis County Board will issue a proclamation for Gun Violence Awareness Month. Meanwhile, also Tuesday, the City of Duluth will light Enger Tower orange, and the City of Hibbing will light its sign orange. Orange is the color associated with Gun Violence awareness, and any individuals or organizations wishing to join in turning on an orange light as a show of support – on Tuesday or throughout the month – is encouraged to do so.

A free community event is also being planned for Saturday, June 14, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Central Hillside Community Park, 12 East 4th Street in Duluth. The family-friendly event will feature speakers, music, and free food.

It will be both a time to remember and honor people lost, as well as opportunity to connect around a shared commitment to ending gun violence. Free gun locks will be available while supplies last, and other resources will be shared.

Among the organizations participating in this event: the Family Freedom Center, Moms Demand Action, Brady United, the Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Attorney’s Office, St. Louis County Public Health, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Women’s Missionary Society and Protect Minnesota. – Press release

Howie: George Thorogood still bad to the bone

Thorogood isn’t one of those legacy acts coasting on streaming royalties and casino circuits. He’s a lifer — one of the last truly American showmen still pounding the boards the old-fashioned way: loud, sweaty, and swinging like rock & roll still matters.
