Governor Walz endorses Mayor Larson for re-election

Larson. Submitted

Today, August 7th, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz endorsed Duluth Mayor Emily Larson for re-election ahead of the August 8 primary. Larson has also received the DFL endorsement for her re-election bid.

“Emily Larson is a workhorse who has dedicated her career to making Duluth a better place for everyone to live and to raise their families,” said Walz. “From street repairs to affordable housing, the challenges facing our communities require leaders who get results while standing up for progressive values. That’s the kind of mayor Emily Larson is, and I’m proud to support her re-election.”

“Governor Walz has been an incredible partner to me and to the city as we work to build a better Duluth,” said Larson. “During the legislative session, we worked together to deliver resources for Duluth that will help us repair more streets, improve public safety, and support economic growth. I look forward to continuing to partner with Governor Walz on issues like affordable housing and childcare to ensure the best for working families and our next generation.”

In addition to Governor Walz and the Duluth DFL, Larson has received the support of many legislators and organizations including Rep. Liish Kozlowski, Rep. Liz Olson, Sen. Gran Hauschild, Conservation Minnesota, The Duluth Building and Construction Trades, and several labor unions. As Mayor, Larson has prioritized economic development, improving street repair, affordable housing, and improving public safety.

Some of Larson’s achievements include:

Streets: Increasing Duluth’s street repairs by 850% from when she took office by creating Duluth’s Street Plan and increasing dedicated city funding for repairs.

Safety: Crime in Duluth has dropped 22% city-wide since Mayor Larson has taken office.

Housing: A record 1,700 units of new housing added in Duluth, creating the city’s first affordable housing trust fund, and an additional $19 million to build new and renovate existing affordable housing.

Climate: A 32% reduction in Duluth’s greenhouse gas pollution.

Larson wants to expand access to affordable childcare, continue to improve Duluth street maintenance and repairs, increase affordable housing, build climate resilience, and support economic development that creates living wage jobs and supports working families.

Howie: The city budget they don't want you to understand

Local Government Aid alone covers nearly $35 million, about one-third of the budget. It’s the difference between black ink and red. Lose even 5 percent of that aid, and Duluth’s “balanced” budget implodes by millions. That’s not financial strength — that’s dependence disguised as stability.

Build North Expo headed to the Heritage Center

“Two things we’ve heard constantly over the years are that people want to start planning and building earlier in the year, and that they want to connect with experts who can take them from start to finish on their projects. That’s what the Build North Expo will do.” -- ABA's Lindsey Whitlinger
