Monsters make roster moves, add consultant

With three consecutive home games to finish the regular season, Minnesota is hoping to finish at least fourth in the nine-team league and secure a home playoff game in the first round of the six-team playoffs.

Willie Howard

DULUTH, Minn. — The Minnesota Monsters made four roster moves Tuesday as they continued to reshape their roster heading into the final stretch of the Arena Football One regular season.

The Monsters, who fell 41-34 to the Michigan Arsenal on Monday night at Amsoil Arena, released defensive back Joseph Powell, defensive back Jadarius Byrd and kicker Aedan Johnson.

Minnesota also placed wide receiver Jamal Couch on injured reserve.

Starting quarterback Ja'Vonte Johnson has struggled with consistency, completing just 46.2% of his passes (122 of 264) while throwing a league-high 14 interceptions through nine games.

Meantime, the Monsters have named former NFL linebacker Willie Howard as the club's senior consultant. Howard, a Stanford graduate and second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2001 NFL Draft, will provide strategic guidance and organizational support as the Monsters prepare for the AF1 playoffs. Howard currently serves as activities director at Robbinsdale Cooper High School after spending 15 seasons as the school's head football coach. He also participated in the Minnesota Vikings' Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship under former coach Mike Tice.

Minnesota (5-4) will host the Kentucky Barrels (7-3) on Sunday, July 5 at Amsoil Arena.
