A tradition since the start of the race in 1977, the Michelina’s All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner is back as part of this year’s 47th annual Grandma’s Marathon.

More than 8,000 plates are typically served each year at this all-day event, which offers a perfect pre-race meal for participants, volunteers, spectators, and the community.

“Our spaghetti dinner is at the very heart of Grandma’s Marathon weekend,” Finance & Operations Director Linda Hanson said. “It’s a great opportunity to offer support and to enjoy a delicious meal as well as a chance to meet folks from your own community and from around the world.”

Attendees will receive all-you-can-eat spaghetti with marinara sauce and a choice of meatballs, Caesar salad, Country Hearth breads, cookies provided by Super One Foods, and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Beverages included are Kemps milk, Dasani water, and Duluth Coffee Company coffee. Beer will also be available for purchase, provided by Superior Beverages.

Each year, the Michelina’s All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner plans to serve:

  • 8,000 plates of spaghetti
  • 5,000 pounds of Michelina’s sauce
  • 2,500 pounds of dry spaghetti
  • 40,000 meatballs
  • 600 loaves of Country Hearth bread
  • 6,000 cups of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream
  • 8,000 servings of Kemps milk
  • 15,000 cookies

The all-day meal will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16 in the Lake Superior Ballroom at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). Tickets will be available at the door and are $16+tax for adults, $8+tax for children ages 5-12, and free for children 4 & under.

Live music returns to Bayfront Festival Park as part of the weekend offerings during the 2023 Grandma’s Marathon weekend, with seven regional and local acts set to take the stage during this year’s event.

The race weekend entertainment first moved to Bayfront Festival Park in 2021 following the COVID-19 pandemic, but the switch has stuck, and the iconic Duluth venue now has become one of the newer, major pieces of Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

The live music lineup starts on Friday, June 16 following the William A. Irvin 5K, and it continues with an all-day celebration on Saturday, June 17 during and following the running of the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and Grandma’s Marathon.

FRIDAY, JUNE 16 (park opens at 5:00 p.m.)

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. – Arch Allies

SATURDAY, JUNE 17 (park opens at 7:00 a.m.)

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Rock-a-Billy Revue

12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Rafe Carlson

2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Laura Velvet

4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – GB Leighton

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. – Buckwild

9:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. – Rhino

The 2023 lineup also marks a return to the Grandma’s Marathon stage for GB Leighton, a member of the race’s Hall of Fame and a local favorite among the running and music communities.

Admission to Bayfront Festival Park is free throughout the entire weekend, and the park and shows are open to all ages.

Public ceremonies like this one don’t always make the evening news. But they should. They are checkpoints in the life of a department that few of us notice until a siren wails down our street or a medic kneels over a loved one.

Howie: Downtown Duluth doesn’t need another study. It needs a pulse

In Milwaukee, people struggling with addiction or mental illness weren’t being cycled through ERs or dumped onto downtown sidewalks. Instead, they had real places to go, real people to meet them, real pathways to stability. That shift gave residents confidence to come back.
