Hermantown shook off a slow start and scored three unanswered goals in the third period to beat Rock Ridge 3-1 in boys high school hockey Tuesday night at Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia.

Senior forward Bode Madill pulled the Hawks even early in the final period, and juniors Mick Martalock and Kole Lendzyk followed with goals for Class 1A, No. 2 Hermantown (2-0-1). Lendzyk’s unassisted, short-handed goal, coming late in the period, sealed the victory and capped a persistent push that tilted the ice toward the Hawks over the final 17 minutes.

Rock Ridge led 1-0 after two periods before Hermantown surged ahead.

The Hawks travel to Mahtomedi on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup and return home Tuesday to face Duluth Marshall at 7 p.m., opening a three-game homestand.

Don Ness and the reinvention of Duluth

Ness convinced Duluth to stop speaking about itself like a city waiting for the next economic funeral and start speaking about itself like a place with a future worth competing for nationally. Not perfectly. Not without backlash. Not without legitimate criticism. But undeniably.
