Hermantown’s depth carried the Hawks to a 5-2 victory over Stella Maris Academy in nonconference girls tennis on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks swept the lower singles and all three doubles matches to lock down the team win. Alee Devlieger set the tone in the No. 3 singles spot, rolling past Luciana Jackman 6-1, 6-0, while teammate Nevie Homich was even more dominant at No. 4, defeating Grace Davis 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Hermantown’s No. 1 pairing of Rylee Kalkbrenner and Cadence Godmare outlasted Stella Maris’ Elyce Klosmaki and Evelyn Patrick in the most dramatic match of the day. After dropping the first set 4-6, the Hawks duo battled back for a 7-5 win in the second and clinched the match with a 10-8 super tiebreak.

Hermantown’s other doubles teams were more decisive. Jillian Ritsche and Chloe Gustafson claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, while McKenna Dorn and Rylie Giesen controlled No. 3 doubles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Stella Maris earned both of its points at the top of the singles ladder. Della Seyfer outlasted Hermantown’s Sophia Piede 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1, and Madeline Plote followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Evie Sullivan at No. 2.

Hermantown’s Ethan Aysta had 12 saves.

Howie: Clark building Monsters to make a deep run in the AF1

A veteran emphasis may define the Monsters’ identity more than anything else. Clark said he deliberately avoided inexperienced arena players, opting instead to load camp with proven winners. At least 16 players on the current roster, he said, have won arena championships.
