St. Scholastica celebrates first-generation college students

The College of St. Scholastica is recognizing the achievements of first-generation college students, faculty and staff this week during First-Generation Celebration Week. The annual event honors those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.

This year’s featured lecture will be presented by Dr. Emily Woster ’06, assistant professor of English and director of the Writing Center, who will reflect on her experiences as a first-generation college student and TRIO McNair Scholars alumna. The lecture will take place Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Center Flex Space.

Later that day, the College will host its Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Induction Ceremony at 4 p.m. in Somers Main Lounge. Tri-Alpha is a national honor society that recognizes academic achievement among first-generation college students and promotes scholarship and peer support across college chapters.

This year’s ceremony will induct 73 new members and honor Matt Hoeschen ’04 (MBA ’24) as the recipient of the 2025 First Gen Alumni Award.
