Subway closing in the Holiday Center

The “Subway” lettering at the chain's Downtown Duluth sandwich shop was being removed and the imprint covered with black paint Wednesday at Holiday Center following the restaurant's permanent closure.

Subway had recently shortened its hours, closing at 3 p.m. following the lunch rush. As Wednesday progressed, cooking appliances were being removed from the site.

"It very sad to see them leave," said a representative of First Properties, the property manager, in an email to BusinessNorth.

Subway joins several other eateries that have closed in the Skywalk during recent years. The Zen House and Valentini’s to Go closed after the COVID-19 outbreak. How Sweet It Is Cakes, which had earlier replaced Z’s Deli, also closed. It was replaced in that location by a scaled-down serve-yourself salad version of Valentini’s. That restaurant, too, closed following the pandemic when it became difficult to find enough workers.

In the fast-changing restaurant world, several other restaurants have been in and out of the Skywalk including Schlotzky’s, McDonald’s, Cookie Company Fast Baked Cookies, Rings and Wings, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Y-not Fast Foods and Gershgol’s Deli.

The value of the Skywalk is currently being reassessed as part of a city effort to improve the shopping area and bring people back to Downtown Duluth.
