Sgt. Berndt and Deputy Sobczak exited their patrol vehicles and gave verbal commands as they approached. Authorities said shots were fired from inside Felver’s vehicle toward the deputies. Berndt and Sobczak returned fire, striking Felver.
Witnesses told investigators the vehicle had been heading north when it crossed the centerline, veered off the roadway and came to rest in the west ditch.
