DULUTH, Minn. — Construction on a two-year project to reconstruct a section of 40th Avenue West will begin Monday, Aug. 24, prompting a detour that is expected to remain in place through the end of October.
This year’s work will focus on 40th Avenue West between Eighth Street and the railroad tracks. Crews also will complete work outside the roadway near Members Cooperative Credit Union.
Residents will continue to have access to their homes, but 40th Avenue West will be closed to through traffic. The posted detour will direct motorists along Morris Thomas Road, Stebner Road, Getchell Road, Highland Street, 57th Avenue West and Grand Avenue. Drivers should allow additional travel time.
St. Louis County Public Works and the city of Duluth are partnering on the project, which will eventually reconstruct nearly a half-mile of 40th Avenue West and add a mini roundabout at Grand Avenue. The city also will replace utilities beneath 40th Avenue West as part of the project.
County officials said the pavement, curb and gutter along 40th Avenue West have reached the end of their service lives. The traffic signal system at Grand Avenue and 40th Avenue West also is nearing the end of its service life.
Construction is expected to pause for the winter after this year’s work concludes. Ulland Brothers is the project contractor.
