Football Results, Week 5

North Branch 47, Duluth Denfeld 12. The No. 4-ranked Hunters fell to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast Red. Senior running back Taye Manns ran for over 180 yards, but it wasn't enough as Duluth Denfeld's defense couldn't get off the field. The favored Hunters will host Cloquet next Friday night. "Too many mistakes against a very good North Branch team was really the story of the game," Duluth Denfeld coach Erik Lofald said in an email today. "We are disappointed that the score ended being so lopsided. We will refocus our attention on Cloquet and look to get back on track."

Hermantown 42, Rock Ridge 12. Martin Sleen rushed for three touchdowns and 178 yards as the Hawks, who led 28-0 at the half, improved to 4-1 and 3-1 with the lopsided homecoming win. Landon Burg had three interceptions for Hermantown, which will host Duluth East (2-3) Friday night.

Howie: Vikings burning it down

That’s the tragedy of this season — it’s not the losing, it’s the lying. Every move is sold as “strategic.” Every mistake is “part of the process.” Every loss is “valuable learning.” It’s a corporate PowerPoint in shoulder pads. This isn’t football anymore. It’s asset management in cleats.

Howie: Bulldogs, Viktor Plante, Mirage, Jason Watt

There’s something quietly magnetic about Jason Watt on a Bulldogs hockey broadcast. He’s not trying to sound like anyone else. He doesn’t force energy or jargon. He just explains the game — clearly, comfortably, and with the kind of authenticity that comes only from having lived it.

Howie: C.J. Ham’s clock is ticking

The likeliest play is a polite handshake extension — one year, maybe two, at something closer to $2 million per. A team-friendly, locker-room-cred deal.
