Table of Contents

Monday

Hermantown’s week begins with football underclassmen on display. The Hawks’ junior varsity face Duluth Denfeld at 5 p.m. at Corey Veech Field at Centricity Stadium. It’s a chance for younger players to get extended reps against a Hunters program that traditionally brings size and toughness.

Tuesday

Hermantown’s cross-country teams head south for the Mora Invitational at Spring Brook Golf Course, a major early-season test against a large field of schools.

The girls tennis team makes the short trip to UMD to meet Stella Maris Academy at 4 p.m.

Soccer fills out the evening with a full Hawks–Hunters showdown. The JV boys host Denfeld at the YMCA fields while the JV girls travel to Lincoln Park Middle School. At night, the girls varsity visits Marv Heikkinen Field and the boys varsity faces Denfeld under the lights at Corey Veech Field.

At home, Hermantown volleyball welcomes Greenway for a tripleheader. The C and JV teams play side by side at 5:45 p.m. before the varsity match takes the main court at 7.

Wednesday

The middle school takes center stage Wednesday. Hermantown’s seventh-grade football team hosts Ashland at 6 p.m. on the practice field, while the eighth-grade squad lines up against Ashland at Corey Veech Field at Centricity Stadium.

Thursday

The girls tennis varsity heads to Laura MacArthur Elementary for a 4:15 p.m. match with Denfeld.

Soccer again splits levels. The girls JV takes on Esko at the YMCA fields, while the varsity plays the Eskomos at Centricity Stadium. The boys JV travels to Proctor for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Egerdahl Field, followed by the varsity matchup at 7.

Volleyball stays home against Hibbing with a program sweep: the C and JV start at 5:45 p.m., leading into the varsity match at 7.

C football also travels, squaring off with Denfeld at Marv Heikkinen Field at 6.

Friday

Friday night lights feature Hermantown’s varsity football team in a key Northeast Red game at Duluth East. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Ordean Stadium. The Hawks (2-0) will try to match their physical ground game against the Greyhounds’ disciplined defense in one of the marquee games of the week in the conference.

Saturday

The weekend begins with youth football, as Hermantown’s fifth- and sixth-graders play at Centricity Stadium from 8 to 11 a.m.

Three volleyball tournaments get underway at 9 a.m. The Hawks’ C team heads to Esko for a multi-team event, while Hermantown’s seventh- and eighth-graders travel to Grand Rapids for the Rapids Spikers Tournament.

Soccer caps the week with a schedule of key matchups. The girls JV hosts Benilde-St. Margaret’s at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity at 3, both at Corey Veech Field. On the boys’ side, Hermantown’s JV visits Superior for a 4 p.m. contest at Field No. 3, with the varsity meeting the Spartans at NBC Spartan Sports Complex at 6.

Howie: Finally, tourism marketing is returning home

Duluth doesn’t need outsiders to tell its story. It never did. The lake tells it. The bridge tells it. The sports teams tell it. The old bars tell it. People tell it every time they complain about the snow in April and brag about the sunset in July.

But here’s the bet: Duluthians are sick of the excuses. They’re sick of levy hikes passed off as inevitabilities. They’re sick of being told to feel guilty if they say no. And they’re ready to support someone who actually treats their money with respect.
