Of course Adam Thielen is back. This is Minnesota. We don’t let go of our sports heroes, even after we already did.
The Vikings swung a midweek deal with Carolina, swapping mid-round draft picks that only hardcore draftniks will pretend to care about, to bring the hometown kid home. Yes, the same Thielen they dumped two years ago when the salary didn’t match the stat sheet. The same Thielen who turned 35 last week and whose wheels have a few too many miles on them.
Why now? Because the Vikings receiver room looks like it’s been hit by a snowplow. Jordan Addison is suspended, Jalen Nailor can’t stay on the practice field, and Rondale Moore’s knee is already toast. Kevin O’Connell’s choices were either call Jerry Rice’s agent or dial up the guy who once caught eight straight 100-yard games back in 2018.
Guess which one was easier?
Thielen’s résumé is real: 534 catches, nearly 7,000 yards, 55 touchdowns in purple. Two Pro Bowls. A record Randy Moss didn’t even own. And yes, a whole lot of Minnesota Nice charity work with his foundation. That’s all in the brochure. But the real story is simple: the Vikings needed a guy who knows the offense and won’t panic on third-and-six. Nostalgia just happened to be the bonus prize.

The problem? Nostalgia doesn’t win football games. Ask the Twins about Joe Mauer’s farewell tour, or the Wolves about bringing back Flip Saunder’s old buddies, or the Wild about … well, everything the Wild have done. Minnesota specializes in “one more lap around the rink” stories that usually end with fans wondering why they got suckered again.
Maybe Thielen has one more decent year in him. He did catch 103 balls for Carolina in 2023, so it’s not like he’s been sitting on the dock at Detroit Lakes with a tackle box. But the difference between “reliable veteran” and “old guy in the way of younger talent” can come quick. And it usually does.
So here we are. Adam Thielen, home again. The Vikings, clinging to the familiar again. The fan base, already dusting off the throwback jerseys again. And in about six weeks, we’ll find out if this is a heartwarming homecoming — or just another Minnesota sports rerun we didn’t really need.
