Howie: Downtown Duluth golf fundraiser Monday at Ridgeview

Ridgeview’s willingness to open its doors underscores its role as more than just a golf course — it is a civic partner. Hosting more than 100 golfers and sponsors on Monday, the club is lending its prestige and setting to a cause to make downtown stronger and safer.

Duluth’s business and civic leaders will trade work for the golf course on Monday, coming together at Ridgeview Country Club for the 6th Annual Chipping Fore Change event, a fundraiser to sustain downtown’s street outreach efforts at a time of rising need.

The scramble-format event, presented by Kolar Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac – Duluth, raises money for the Downtown Duluth Street Outreach Program, which connects people experiencing homelessness with housing, treatment and vital services.

The outreach program has shown measurable results since outreach specialist Nathan Kesti began the role in November 2022. In less than two years, he has recorded more than 23,000 self-initiated contacts with unhoused individuals and nearly 4,700 business contacts, helping move 76 people into stable housing and connecting 62 individuals to treatment.

Businesses call on these services daily. It’s a program that has made a real difference downtown, and events like this fundraiser are critical to keeping it going.

The day begins with golfer registration at 11 a.m. A shotgun starts at noon, with foursomes playing 18 holes before a dinner and awards program at 5:30 p.m. Lunch will be available for purchase at the club grill, and dinner is included for participants thanks to sponsor Northland Constructors of Duluth, LLC.

“We have seen this event grow significantly since we chose to dedicate proceeds to our Outreach Program,” said Kristi Stokes, President of the Downtown Duluth organization. “That’s a testament to the significance of the program and its impact on our downtown. Our community embraces the mission of our Outreach and the great work of our specialist, Nathan Kesti. With this event, they can have a little fun while supporting a good cause.”

The setting itself is part of the story. Founded in 1921, Ridgeview Country Club is woven into the fabric of Duluth’s history. Perched on rolling terrain with sweeping views of the city and Lake Superior, the course has long been considered one of northern Minnesota’s classic layouts.

Generations of Duluth families have played its tree-lined fairways, and its clubhouse has hosted countless weddings, civic dinners and community celebrations. Over the decades, Ridgeview has welcomed amateur tournaments, charity outings and corporate events, always with a reputation for hospitality and championship-caliber conditions.

For Chipping Fore Change, Ridgeview’s willingness to open its doors underscores its role as more than just a golf course — it is a civic partner. Hosting more than 100 golfers and sponsors in September, the club is lending its prestige and setting to a cause to make downtown stronger and safer.

The event would not be the same without Ridgeview. It’s a historic course, a beautiful setting, and a host that understands the importance of bringing people together for the greater good.

This year’s event features strong community backing from a lineup of major sponsors:

. Kolar Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac – Duluth, the presenting sponsor, has been a household name in the Twin Ports auto industry for decades. Known for its wide selection of vehicles and strong community engagement, Kolar’s investment ensures Chipping Fore Change remains one of downtown Duluth’s signature fundraisers. Beyond cars and trucks, the Kolar family has a long philanthropy and civic support history across northeastern Minnesota.

. Northland Constructors of Duluth, LLC, the dinner sponsor, has built roads, bridges and critical infrastructure throughout the region since 1970. The company’s work literally shapes how Duluth moves, and its backing of this event underscores a belief in strengthening the community's physical and social fabric. Providing dinner for every golfer is a gesture of hospitality that reflects Northland’s broader commitment to community building.

. Oneida Realty, the golf cart sponsor, has been part of the Duluth real estate landscape for decades, managing properties and supporting downtown revitalization. By sponsoring the golf carts, Oneida ensures participants can easily navigate the Ridgeview course, signaling its commitment to making Duluth’s core more accessible and vibrant.

. Ascential Wealth Advisors, serving as Hole-in-One Sponsor, is one of the region’s leading financial advisory firms. With offices in Duluth and a reputation for guiding families and businesses through complex planning decisions, Ascential’s involvement emphasizes long-term community well-being. Their sponsorship of the hole-in-one contest brings excitement and highlights their role in helping clients achieve financial milestones.

. Adolfson & Peterson Construction, the putting green sponsor, is one of the nation’s oldest family-owned construction firms, with a strong presence in Minnesota. Known for large-scale projects in healthcare, education and civic development, A&P’s sponsorship connects its legacy of building enduring structures to building stronger communities. Their support of the putting green reflects the firm’s value of precision, teamwork and community impact.

In addition to the lead sponsors, a wide slate of local businesses has signed up as hole sponsors and outreach tee box sponsors. Each will be visible on the course with tents, banners and giveaways, providing support and spirit to the event.

These businesses might not be the headline sponsors, but they are the backbone of this event. Every logo on a sign, every swag bag item, every handshake on the tee box sends a message that downtown matters. Can't attend? Donate.
