McCarthy out for the season

"Many quarterbacks have faced similar challenges early in their careers and have returned even stronger. I not only expect that for J.J., I know it will happen." Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell on J.J. McCarthy

Coach Kevin O'Connell said Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy had a complete surgical repair of his torn meniscus earlier today and will miss the entire 2024 season.

"This morning, he underwent surgery on the meniscus, overseen by our team physician, Dr. Chris Larson at Twin Cities Orthopedics," said O'Connell. "The procedure was successful, but it did show that a repair was necessary, which unfortunately means J.J.'s season will end."

O'Connell said McCarthy will rehabilitate in Minnesota and stay engaged with team meetings and activities off the field.

"Many quarterbacks have faced similar challenges early in their careers and have returned even stronger. I not only expect that for J.J., I know it will happen," said O'Connell. "We have a solid plan for him, involving not just the quarterback room with Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall, but also a regimen for him and me to continue developing our connection and ensuring a daily football routine.

"Initially, the focus will be on his rehabilitation and the physical journey back. We anticipate a complete recovery."
