Minnesota Star Tribune expands access to fact-based journalism with new sharing, subscription options

MINNEAPOLIS — At a time of heightened uncertainty across Minnesota, the Minnesota Star Tribune announced new steps to broaden access to its fact-based, independent local journalism.

The Star Tribune has made its live breaking-news blog available outside the paywall, allowing all readers to follow a continuously updated stream of verified reporting from local journalists. The live blog is accessible on the newspaper’s digital platforms.

For the first time, the Star Tribune is also allowing subscribers to gift an unlimited number of articles. The change is intended to help readers share reliable information with friends and family in Minnesota and beyond, removing previous limits on article sharing.

The newspaper is introducing a new Family Plan subscription that includes four unique logins, enabling multiple household members to access local coverage. For a limited time, the Family Plan is available at an introductory rate of 70% off, or $90 for up to four accounts for the first year.

New subscribers who prefer a single account can also purchase a standard subscription at an introductory rate of $65, reduced from the regular $260 annual price.

Readers seeking to further support the newsroom may donate to the Minnesota Star Tribune Local News Fund. Donations go entirely toward newsroom operations and journalist support, including updated personal protective equipment and safety gear for reporters working in the field.

“In extraordinary times, independent, fact-based journalism is a public necessity,” said Steve Grove, publisher and CEO of the Minnesota Star Tribune. “Community support is critical and ensures we can continue to meet this moment and deliver the crucial reporting Minnesotans, and the world, deserve.”

More information about subscriptions, article sharing and the Local News Fund is available on the Minnesota Star Tribune’s website.

The Bellville and Baumgarten hires reflect a newsroom making deliberate bets: on audience intelligence, on subject-matter authority, and on leadership that understands journalism doesn’t succeed just because it’s good — it succeeds because it reaches people where they actually live now.

Howie on local prep hockey

I’m not handing Hermantown a boys hockey state trophy in January. I’ve been around too long for that. But when the Section 7A tournament begins and the pressure turns real, I know who I’m riding with. I’ve seen this movie before. It usually ends with everyone else wondering how they missed it.
