DULUTH, Minn. — The Minnesota Monsters delivered their most complete performance of the Arena Football One season Sunday night, combining a suffocating defensive effort with seven touchdown passes from quarterback Ja'Vonte Johnson to roll past the Kentucky Barrels 60-8 at Amsoil Arena.
Minnesota (6-4) seized control early and never let Kentucky (7-4) establish any offensive rhythm, forcing three interceptions while holding the Barrels without a passing touchdown. The Monsters improved their playoff position with one of the league's most dominant victories of the season, overwhelming Kentucky on both sides of the football.
Johnson finished 10 of 22 passing for 138 yards despite throwing three interceptions, but he more than compensated by tossing seven touchdown passes and adding a 1-yard rushing touchdown. His ability to capitalize in the red zone allowed Minnesota to turn nearly every scoring opportunity into six points.
Carlos Thompson Jr. emerged as Johnson's favorite target, catching four passes for 78 yards and three touchdowns, including a 37-yard scoring strike that highlighted Minnesota's explosive night. Jarvai Flowers added three receptions for 40 yards and two touchdowns, while LeDarian McAllister hauled in two catches for 21 yards and another score.
The Monsters also received an unlikely offensive contribution from defensive lineman Claude Davis, who rushed twice for 22 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run, and added a 9-yard touchdown reception.
Minnesota's defense set the tone from the opening possession.
Defensive backs Delvon Randall and Trevon Jones spearheaded the takeaway parade. Randall intercepted two passes, while Jones added another interception as Kentucky quarterback Eric Phoenix struggled throughout the evening. Phoenix completed just 17 of 44 passes for 85 yards with three interceptions and no touchdown passes.
The Monsters' defensive front consistently pressured Kentucky's offense despite the quick-release nature of the indoor game. Antonio Simley, Shaki Holines and Toree Boyd each recorded a sack as Minnesota repeatedly forced the Barrels into difficult passing situations.
Javonte Haynes led the Monsters with six tackles, while Randall and Jones each added five stops to complement their interceptions. Labarron Mallory finished with four tackles, and Trevon Shorts contributed three.
Kentucky managed just one touchdown all night, coming on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Phoenix. The Barrels generated only 86 total offensive yards through the air and never mounted a sustained scoring threat against Minnesota's aggressive defense.
The Monsters also received a steady performance from kicker Michael Hall, who converted seven of nine extra-point attempts.
Minnesota's balanced effort featured contributions across the roster. Offensive lineman Gunner Hurlburt even carried four times for 19 yards, while Shorts added a 6-yard run as the Monsters mixed creative play-calling with their efficient passing attack.
The victory continued Minnesota's late-season surge as the Monsters strengthened their position in the AF1 playoff race. More importantly, it showcased the complementary football head coach Daron Clark Jr. has sought throughout the season — explosive offense, opportunistic defense and timely special teams.
When Minnesota plays with that combination, it looks every bit like a championship contender.
AF1 NOTEBOOK: Kentucky made sweeping roster changes Monday, announcing the suspension of eight players and the release of nine others in one of the most significant personnel overhauls of the Arena Football One season.
The moves came as several AF1 teams continued reshaping their rosters heading into the final stretch of the regular season, with the Barrels making by far the league's most extensive changes. Kentucky also confirmed the releases of quarterback Shae Spencer and eight additional players.
Among those suspended were standout wide receiver Darius Prince, defensive lineman Zeke Rose, offensive lineman Melvin Hollins, defensive back Joe Powell, linebacker Donovan Ollie, defensive lineman GeeMontae Peck, defensive back Bashu Delco and kicker Ammon Lakip.
Kentucky also released Spencer, offensive linemen Jamezz Kimbrough, Ryan Johnson and Noah Buttiglieri, defensive linemen Sidney Houston Jr., Joe Golden and Freddie Booth-Lloyd, and wide receivers KaRonce Higgins and Shiloh Flanigan.
The roster overhaul comes as Kentucky continues its push toward the AF1 playoffs. The Barrels entered the week among the league's top contenders, making the volume of transactions one of the season's most notable roster shakeups.
Kentucky did not immediately announce corresponding additions or provide reasons for the suspensions.
