Photo of the Day: Minnesota Monsters take the field on Independence Day weekend

Rather than simply documenting a pregame entrance, photog Oliver Tran captures the excitement, focus and anticipation that define one of the game's most emotional moments. The photograph invites viewers onto the field alongside the players as they prepare to compete in front of their home crowd.

The Minnesota Monsters storm onto the turf during pregame introductions before their Fourth of July Arena Football One game against the Kentucky Barrels at Amsoil Arena. The image captures more than a team preparing for kickoff. It captures anticipation, energy and the emotional connection between players and fans moments before competition begins.

The photograph was created by Oliver Tran, an emerging visual journalist whose work is rooted in authentic storytelling and the pursuit of genuine human emotion.

A native of Saint Paul, Tran is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he continues to develop a documentary style that emphasizes honest, compelling moments. His passion for photography began at just 5 years old after receiving his first camera, a simple point-and-shoot that sparked a lifelong fascination with visual storytelling.

Today, Tran approaches every assignment with the same mission: to create photographs that allow viewers to experience what the people in his images are feeling. Whether covering breaking news, human-interest features or sporting events, he believes the strongest photographs are those that leave a lasting emotional impression long after the moment has passed.

That philosophy is evident in this image. Rather than simply documenting a pregame entrance, Tran captures the excitement, focus and anticipation that define one of the game's most emotional moments. The photograph invites viewers onto the field alongside the players as they prepare to compete in front of their home crowd.

Tran says his curiosity about people continues to shape his work. He enjoys building connections through conversation and believes every person has a story worth telling. His love of travel has introduced him to different cultures and perspectives, further strengthening his commitment to visual journalism that reflects the shared emotions connecting people from all walks of life.

As he continues his career, Tran remains dedicated to producing photographs that are both visually striking and deeply human — images that do more than record history, but help audiences feel it.

Each innovation sparked debate. Each was accused, at one time or another, of making journalism less authentic. Yet journalism endured because the profession was never about the equipment. It was about the work.
