Hermantown’s girls cross country team turned in a strong showing at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis on Saturday, finishing third overall in the Gopher Race division. The Hawks were the top Class AA team in the field.

In a field of 224 runners, Zoey Lucarelli led Hermantown with a 20th-place finish, followed closely by her sister Nora Lucarelli in 21st. Ferrah LaLone placed 35th, Kenzie Davis 49th and Morgan Panichi 79th to round out the scoring for the Hawks.

On the boys side, Cooper Lucarelli highlighted the day for Hermantown, finishing fifth overall in the Larry Zirgibel Gold Race. That event featured 270 runners.

“Even though the course was very challenging, and we did not see any prpr’ss, our athletes still performed very well,” said Hawks Coach Andy Wilcox. “It had rained the night before so there were some soggy parts of the course, and with the race being the day after the college races were held on a college level course the difficulty was raised above what a normal course we see week to week.”

Hermantown rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Duluth Denfeld 4-2 in a high school girls soccer match Saturday.

Ana Haugen put the Hunters on the board in the eighth minute with an unassisted strike, and Stella Nickila doubled the lead in the 23rd minute off a setup from Luci Chastey.

The Hawks cut the deficit before halftime when Claire Niksich converted a pass from Vienna Kolenda in the 36th minute.

Hermantown controlled the second half, scoring three unanswered goals. Danika Bolf tied the match in the 45th minute on a feed from Avea Harriman, and Kolenda netted the go-ahead goal three minutes later off a pass from Bryden Giesen. McKenna Johnson added an insurance goal in the 57th minute, assisted by Audrina Daniels.

Denfeld goalkeeper Bella Dwinell made nine saves. Hermantown split time in net, with Lucy Critchley stopping seven shots in the first half and Cambria Thomas adding three saves in the second half.

There’s something quietly magnetic about Jason Watt on a Bulldogs hockey broadcast. He’s not trying to sound like anyone else. He doesn’t force energy or jargon. He just explains the game — clearly, comfortably, and with the kind of authenticity that comes only from having lived it.
