Vikings sign defensive back Bobby McCain

The Vikings have bolstered their defensive backfield once more.

On Monday, Minnesota signed defensive back Bobby McCain following his workout on Sunday, an off day for players at the Vikings Training Camp.

To accommodate McCain's addition, Minnesota released kicker John Parker Romo, acquired during free agency before the Vikings selected kicker Will Reichard in the draft.

McCain offers the Vikings a wealth of experience, having started in 87 of the 131 regular-season NFL games he has played with Miami, Washington, and the New York Giants.

A former Memphis college football player, McCain entered the NFL in 2015 as the Dolphins' fifth-round selection.

His tenure there lasted until the 2020 season, including a two-season overlap with Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores, who served as Miami's head coach from 2019-21.

During his time with the Dolphins, McCain started in 55 of 87 games, amassing 254 tackles, nine for loss, seven quarterback hits, 4.0 sacks, 30 passes defended, and seven interceptions.

Between 2021-22, McCain started in 32 of 34 games for Washington, recording 139 tackles, three for loss, one quarterback hit, 14 passes defended, and four interceptions.

In 2023, McCain played in 10 games, mainly on special teams, for the Giants.

McCain's signing comes after the first week of training camp, during which cornerback Mekhi Blackmon sustained a torn ACL on July 24, in the first team practice. in the first team practice on July 24.

The Vikings are also grieving the loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, who died in an automobile accident on July 6. Jackson's funeral took place on July 26 in Maryland.

Prior to McCain's signing, the Vikings had already brought on cornerbacks Duke Shelley and Jacobi Francis since the start of camp.

Howie: Hughes trade, DECC to host World Junior Championship exhibitions

This is a bet that Hughes ages cleanly, that his body cooperates, that the cap continues to rise, and that the surrounding cast can be managed without suffocation. It’s a bet that Minnesota can finally pull off the superstar contract that doesn’t end in regret.

Howie: The library isn’t the story. It never was.

This time, the leverage isn’t casino revenue. It’s downtown frustration — visible poverty, safety complaints, business dissatisfaction and the persistent sense that downtown Duluth has not lived up to decades of promises.

Howie: Arena Football One releases 2026 master schedule

Twelve games per team. A defined start in April. A defined finish in July. Balanced home-and-away slates. Built-in byes. Repeat matchups that suggest geography matters again. It reads less like a marketing flyer and more like an operating plan.
