Duluth Marshall, Hermantown battle to OT tie

Hermantown moved to 3-0-2 and will remain home Thursday to face Centennial. Marshall is 5-0-1 heading into Friday’s trip to Rochester Mayo.

Duluth Marshall erased a three-goal deficit in the final minutes and forced overtime Tuesday, skating to a 5-5 tie against second-ranked Hermantown at Hermantown Hockey Arena.

The Hilltoppers trailed 5-2 with just over eight minutes remaining before three unanswered goals — including two by senior forward Bennett Scissons — capped an improbable late surge.

Marshall pulled its goaltender for an extra skater in the closing moments, and Scissons delivered the equalizer through traffic with seconds left in regulation, completing a three-point night.

The late comeback spoiled what had appeared to be a decisive Hermantown finish. The Hawks stretched their lead when Kole Lendzyk scored midway through the third, following earlier goals that helped the hosts build control.

Junior Mick Martalock opened the night with a shorthanded tally, and Hermantown later struck again with only a tenth of a second remaining in the first period, marking the second straight game the Hawks scored with less than a second left in a period.

Marshall began its push with a timeout and quick goal from Sam Berry, cutting the deficit to two. Scissons added his second moments later, giving the Hilltoppers the momentum they lacked through much of the first and early second periods.

Both goaltenders were central figures in overtime, where chances came at both ends but no winner emerged. Marshall’s Wyatt Brown finished with 38 saves, while Hermantown’s Bryce Francisco stopped 39.

Hermantown moved to 3-0-2 and will remain home Thursday to face Centennial. Marshall is 5-0-1 heading into Friday’s trip to Rochester Mayo.

Proctor-Hermantown rolled to a 5-0 high school girls hockey road win over Hibbing-Chisholm Tuesday night.

Five different players scored for Mirage, and 10 figured into the scoring. Avery Milbridge led the effort with a goal and assist.

Proctor/Hermantown limited Hibbing/Chisholm to only eight shots, allowing goaltender Suri Langley a smooth path to the shutout. Bluejackets goaltender Bryjah Schnipkoweit finished with 46 saves.

Howie: Reinert has failed Downtown Duluth

The library debate generated plenty of noise and no resolution. Skywalk conversations took up oxygen without producing a clear direction. The broader Imagine Downtown Duluth effort exists, but still feels like a $300,000 plan waiting for a moment when it becomes real in ways people can’t miss.

Howie: Forsman the best choice for Duluth’s next mayor

Arik Forsman doesn’t posture. He doesn’t spend his time trying to win the internet for a day. He leans into the unglamorous mechanics of governing — budgets, policy detail, stakeholder conversations — and does it with a steadiness that’s easy to overlook if you’re chasing noise instead of results.
